The Deck Jacket thread.

I’m in the north U.S. Here I wear my Deck between 0 and 40 F. Parka is excellent for below 0 or blizzard. I find with a heavy sweater underneath my Iron Heart Deck jacket keeps me very warm, the only issue is the lack of a hood. I am not a fan of hoods on jackets, and I only use them if it’s raining or below freezing. I like the N-3B because the snorkel hood covers my face when there is a severe wind chill or blizzard. I have an alternate parka which is down for when I have to dress up and the old surplus N-3B isn’t appropriate. I can’t say I am a fan of this summer weather, now that I have heavier coats I prefer winter.

I haven’t looked through this entire thread, but if you want a more modern fit on an N1, I highly recommend giving Iron Heart A go.

Nice thing is that if it doesn’t work out you can return it for minimal cost.
I somehow overlooked your answer. I am actually thinking about an IH N-1, if they are available again.

@WolfofStateSt : you once wrote what size your IH is, but I can't find it anymore. As we are similar in size, your size might suit me.

Pike Brothers is a name that gets thrown around a lot, they are more affordable than Iron Heart and more accurate I think.

I like them PIKE BROTHRES N1 a lot - the only "flaw" that i see is the sleeves are kinda "wide" compared to any other repop i own ... - perfect if you intend to layer underneath - maybe not that "practical" if you want to wear just a sweater or a shirt under it ...

I find the same issue in my RRL N1, its unlined and has very wide sleeves. So wearing with just a shirt or tee looks a bit off. Not sure if I like it enough to keep the jacket.

On another note, I got a A2 Deck jacket from Buzz Rickson. Absolutely freaking lovely. I will post some pics later

As for A2 "permeable jackets" i preffer originals - they are available on EBAY for relatively small money in good condition ...

I know you didn’t ask but I figured I’d give you my size. I‘m 6’2” 180 with a 42” chest. I wear a XL in the IH N1. I like a bit of wiggle room for layering, I might have been able to size down, but I like how it feels.

My only complaint about the IH is the sleeve length, which is always too long on jackets and shirts.

Also, they are releasing a “lightweight”N1 this fall, which I’m pretty excited about. Here’s the link:

Thank you very much. I think long sleeves are great ;) The body length is the thing I'm struggling with. It seems very long to me. But as I'm 196 cm tall, that could be put into perspective. I have set up a notification with IH and will hopefully be informed when they are available.

I think that ‘bang for buck’ the Pike Bros. N-1 is probably the best value deck jacket currently available.
The only thing which really lets them down is the sleeves. I’ve now handled 4, 3 were size Large, and the other was an Extra Large, and on each one the sleeves were far too tubular. They were also overly long when compared to the sizing of jacket.
If Pike Bros. could just get the sleeve design sorted their N-1 could end up possibly being the first choice deck jacket for most people, at any price point.

I’m poring over size charts trying to guess what my size would be for a BR or IH N1. I’m typically a Medium - 38” chest but wide shoulders (18.5”). Because of all the thick lining I’m not sure if the shoulders would be too tight for me with those brands Medium and if I should go up to a Large.

Looking to buy used, so it’s not like I can easily exchange for a different size.

Advice welcome!

I’d say a medium in IH as well.

I generally go by the chest measurements more so than the shoulders.
