The Dobbs Diner...

  1. Thanks Dale. I really like this as well and am still considering a whip-stitched western hat in my future. I'll either look like an 8-year-old from the '50s or a cowgirl. But maybe not ... :D

It's definitely got that 50s cowboy vibe... I think that's what I like so much about it.

Glad that one worked out for you, Bob, it's a beaut. I'd love to get my hands on one of those for comparison to the Alexander GP clone I picked up last year.

  4. Thanks Jim! I agree with Joe (@Blare ) that the felt is really nice with the suede finish a joy to touch. I didn't blow on it to see if the felt moved, but with brushing the crown it almost felt like I was chasing the felt as it moved away from the brush easily in all directions. I thought I was going to have to put in on a block to give it a decent brushing. It was very similar to the Hankachif felt I had on a Dobbs that went to Max.

I have one Hankachif felt and a couple of Playboys that fill that bill or close to it. The Alexander is a suede finish, which is nice, but it's fairly thick.

I have never ever seen any hat with that "whip stitching" on it and liked it. Until now. Combined with the minor signs of age on the hat, it just works. Can't explain it, but I know what I like. Nice hat Mr. Hufford!

It definitely does.... When I had to replace the stitching on mine... the thread I used was a bit thicker and on my first attempt I double threaded the need the same way the original thread was. But since my thread was so much thicker it came off WAY too Sheriff Woody for my tastes. So I started over with just a single strand. Still a little bit thick but much much better.

Dobbs 15. Cleaned up really nice! First pics are from seller and don’t show the deep cocoa brown color. Felt is velvety soft and the crease you see was easily formed. 2 3/8” brim, 5 1/4” open crown, 2” grosgrain ribbon. Great condition with no moth tracks and supple sweatband. Liner tip is wax paper. I’m thinking early ‘50s, maybe even late ‘40s.

Beautiful hat Snow. Great job cleaning it up. Those Fifteens of that era are as nice or probably nicer than the Twenties of just a few years later. Nice find.

Thanks, Joe. The felt is amazing - dense and soft. I did some research on the patent number on the sweat, and found it was issued in 1953.

  18. Anyone see this this liner before? Dobbs Made in the English Way:

Maybe it’s not that uncommon but it’s the first time I’ve seen it.
