The origin of short sleeves?

Google wants to give me nothing but stores that sell short sleeved anythings with a search for "history/origin of short sleeves," so I'm wondering if anyone knows when and where short sleeves came about. I read the men's short sleeved shirt actually came from women's styles. Sort of makes sense to me, but the history -- like many histories -- could be muddled over time. The earliest pictures I see of short sleeves for men are from the 1930s with those double pocketed Ike-jacket-esque summer shirts.

So, anyone know? Thanks!
