as long as they're covering their heads with some form of yarmulka, cap or hat.

Or a nice straw hat, obviously…

And there are perfectly Orthodox regional traditions where people would only don a hat or a skullcap for prayers and the like, though most have taken over the mainstream custom of always wearing a headcovering.

Thanks for pointing that out, too.

A great post I stumbled across from 20 years ago. In the time since this past, the prevalent style amount the youth had changed to the smallest brims that had been out of fashion when @besdor was commenting. Wider brims are still worn among many is the older members of the community.

One thing that has changed is the hat suppliers. As I have mentioned in other threads here previously, a Hungarian factory, Sunemar, had taken over a lot of the non-Italian (read Borsalino) production in the community. One unfortunate fact that I began noticing years ago was the way this factory and others attempt to "fool" the customer into believing he is getting a real Italian-made hat.

I believe the hat down below, and should at its own stores in NJ is such a hat. The manufacturing tag only mentions make in Europe (both Italy and Hungary) would qualify. The back of the tag mentions the lining being made it Italy (fodera being Italian for lining), and the after-manufacturing sizing sticker is the exact same as used internationally by Borsalino. The model name, Toscana, has an Italian air about it (as is commonly used as a model name for Italian-styled, but not made, hats

All of this is a shame because 1) it is trying to fool the customer; 2) the Hungarian manufacturer gets no credit for having made a reasonably nice fedora; and 3) the upcharge is ridiculous.

I am posting here in the hopes that one looking for this information will find it. As we have been told by a great businessman, "an educated consumer is our best customer."
