I have wanted to get a Knox 100. But the only one I ever saw on ebay went for like $500! .... and that was about $200 more than I had at the time.

Thanks, Harv. I even got it at a (to my mind) very fair price: $99.

Centric: Josh sold a Knox 100 on eBay in 2012 for around $580, and Alan sold one (even nicer) last year to another lounger for $675. I was low on cash at the time, but I would gladly have paid $1.000 for Alan's. It's the most beautiful and perfectly executed American hat, I have ever seen. A few Central European I've seen (but never handled or owned) could maybe compete. Aaron is the fortunate lounger, that now has the pleasure of acting custode for this pristine relic of American cultural history.

Well, I sure wish I had one. Like I said, I've only ever seen one go up on ebay. It was probably that $580 one you are mentioning.

I am, indeed, the fortunate custodian of this fantastic Knox 100. I second Ole's perspective on the hat; it's a work of art, a true piece of American craftsmanship. Although it's been a bit too hot lately to wear it, I try to wear the hat with a certain regularity. Here are some headshots; I really need to take some better shots of the hat's features, and when I do, I'll post 'em here. Forgive the poor model. He is not a true piece of American craftsmanship.

It has a lovely felted edge but the brim is a little stingy for my taste.

I bought a Stetson and a Portis from you as well.

I really like the fawn colored Stetson it's my favorite hat so far, the Knox is nice but probably won't get as much wear.

This is a question Brad about the Knox 100 above. I thought HCA listed crown depth, and block numbers on the tags behind the sweatbands throughout the 40s and 50s and dropped the crown depth in the late 50s or early 60s? The tag on the 100 is missing the block and crown depth, or at least that's how it appears to me?

I looked back through the thread, and didn't see a 100 with tags posted recently. Are you asking about the straw Panama posted by Rogera? It's missing that information, but that's not unusual on straw hats from HCA. Often they'll have completely different labels from felts hats, and it's not uncommon to see block and depth information missing. This label happens to be a '40s style, though.

Brad I have noticed that the block and depth info missing from HCA straw hats I have previously owned. I was referring to the Knox 100 posted by Lotahats, which seems to be missing the block number and crown depth. The reason I asked is because I previously posted in the classifieds and another thread(s) the Knox Custom Edge below. You indicated the hat was probably from the late 50s or early 60s because that is when the HCA dropped the block and depth from their tags and even though the hat had similar characteristics of a 40s era hat (high crown and wide brim) it was likely a more contemporary hat. If that's the case what are the specific indicators that the Knox One Hundred posted by Lotsahats is a 40s era hat?

I also previously posted this Cavanagh One Hundred which shows the HCA tag with the block and crown depth. This obviously isn't a Knox One Hundred but I was under the impression that Knox, Dobbs, Cavanagh C&N who were all part of the HCA used essentially the same tags with the same information!

I'm still confused, because I don't see a tag photo posted by Lotsahats. He didn't show us anything of the inside. Without seeing the inside, I'd say his hat is a 1950s hat, because that's really the era of the 100s, extending into the 1960s, not the 1940s.

My mistake Brad, I was looking at the post below which showed a tag from a vintage Panama hat. I should have looked a little closer since I haven't seen the tag on the Knox One Hundred to know what information is on it.
