You surely can.

Speaking of terms like "campy" and "kitchy" ... what ever happened to this Golden Era word: "droll"?

.

Well, you know, time has taken its droll on all of us. :p

I forgot to mention a word I haven't heard in a long time---dignity. It would be beneath my dignity to show movies on a dead star's gravestone. I sure wouldn't want anyone to use my resting place as a Disneyland. :eusa_doh:

I basically concur. But what do you do if the people projecting films on the side of someone's mausoleum represent their only remaining fan base of any significance?

Sometimes, sadly, camp is all you've got left.

My neighborhood is crawling with 20-something smug sarcastic hipsters ... and there isn't even a university nearby, so I don't know what their excuse is. I'm sick and tired of seeing, hearing and smelling them.

You made me remember this line:

"I have one motto I've always lived by: Dignity. Always dignity." –Gene Kelly as Don Lockwood, a tongue-in-cheek movie star, in Singin’ in the Rain.

You know, I’ve a hunch that some of these deceased film stars would have liked the attention. For millenia, the words of great men and women have been read aloud in front of their tombs. The legacy of great film actors is their performance on celluloid. Why not pay homage to them by presenting their legacy in front of their resting places? It may not be as macabre as it seems.

It's actually not macabre at all. I went to such a screening around Halloween a few years ago. I don't recall which actor's tomb "hosted" but one of the films shown was The Raven. The lawn was full of genuine film lovers and there wasn't one mocking giggle to be heard.

It was all pretty respectful, I felt.

I consider it junk but that may just be me. I wouldn't buy a picture hanger at IKEA either.

Sometimes I don't know why I even talk to you, JP!

Unfortunately, like everything else, Ikea ain't what it used to be. I've had a few of their pieces from the 50s come through my hands and they were of solid construction. Not the flimsy garbage they sell today.

Just wanted to add my voice against the smug hipsters who deride the popular culture of the past as "camp." As an obsessive fan of '60s girl-pop music, I just wish I had a dollar for every time I've read a piece by a young writer laughing about the "campiness" of the songs. It's as though they're embarrassed to actually just like the music, and need some ironic pseudo-intellectual viewpoint to hide behind. There's more sincerity in the music of the Shangri-Las than there is 99% of indie rock, but it's all just "camp" or "kitsch" to the hipsters.

Okay, I'll get off my soap box now.

Everytime I even walk by an IKEA it gives me hives. :eusa_doh:
You talk to me because you haven't learned to use the ignore feature yet. :p I love the ignore feature. It keeps me out of trouble. ;)
