I find the "white text on a black ground" quite a relief, after reading black on white. I find this forum quite easy on my old eyes.
White text on black is surely easier on the eyes than yellow on black.

FYI saying "keep in mind I have a degree in design" is, well, pretty funny.

To me I see it as being unnecessarily boastful. I'd say more on this, but I might get into trouble...so...

Regarding the colour-scheme...

It is fine as it is, but it would look nicer if there was a bit more colour.

As noone else has mentioned, I also throw into the mix that a predominantly black screen is apparently more environmentally friendly... See, for instance:
