RBH - I love the Shepherd's Check. The contrasting patterns make the ensemble uniquely personal. And bonus points for the brown suede.

I do tend to go for the more unique and original look. Mixing various tweeds and fabrics all together.. I do get accused of being over the top.. but, hey, we all like to be individuals here don't we?!

Alan, I had no idea of this wee hobby!! I have an Irish Blackthorn stick (very basic and the thin 'walking out' type) which had been my father's. But I'd be interested to hear more about your canes, the styles, types..etc (maybe a new thread Alan? ). Very interesting though!

All I will say is that anyone who thinks a good cane carried in the city is a meaningless affectation has never had robbery attempted on them, and anyone who thinks the same about taking a blackthorn knobstick on a country walk has never been attacked by a mean farm dog or a bull. The cane or knobstick is a traditional accessory that serves a number of purposes including protected the gentleman and his lady from harm.

I make sticks and canes for friends as gifts or to commemorate special occasions. As I spend a couple of weeks on each, I like to 'road test' them before I hand them over. I was carrying one such yesterday (made for the father of the bride at a forthcoming wedding) and more or less chose the outfit to go with it. I have actually made two over Christmas - one silver and one gold. The gold one is for another special occasion, which will be made clear later.

Irish sticks are great (particularly when they are made of bog oak, which the traditional Shilelagh stick should be) but I like the traditional English knobstick best. My favourite is one that I made for a friend and was 'field testing' it when my wife and I were attacked by a very angry bull. What happened next is, as it says in 'Billy Budd', history, but I am convinced that the good stick saved us from serious injury. Needless to say, I made another stick for my friend and kept that one, suitable 'done up', as a valued friend

Affectation? I don't think so.

I..er..don't like to show off ones that I have made.

But plans have had to change as gales have wrecked havoc across Scotland/Northern England and so 'work' needs to be done around the outside of the house. So plans have had to become flexible![huh]
