What do you use on your curls?

My hair is pretty thick and heavy and my curls tend to fall out after a few hours. Is setting lotion apporpriate if your using a curling iron or hot rollers? Hair spray seems to make my hair too "crunchy" or my hair seperates. I'd love to find something that defines them, makes them smooth, and keeps them in! Any ideas?
