Mantic59 did a post on what SOTD posts reveal about real world shaving. He could have been talking about you, @Trenchfriend. Or me.

I'm still using the Gillette Old Type. More and more I think that was the peak of DE razor design and it was downhill from there. I use the same soap (The Fat) and same aftershave (Grand Bay) and rotate among brushes and blades.

I got interested in DE shaving when I first rocked up here. A big driver was how expensive cartridge razors had become, and the amount of plastic involved. DE blades are ridiculously cheap by comparison (I bought a new bath of 100 recently, for just five notes). Alas, cartridges are still a necessity for my head, but for the face, DE set-up cost-savings very quickly recouped the cost of the initial set-up. After the learning curve, I get a better shave, two - five minutes for a three-pass DE shave leaves me presentable for the office for two days, and not looking like an animal for an entire weekend if I don't have to be out anywhere especially tidy.

Cartridge razors are, I suppose, an easier learning curve, but definitely not the same quality o result for me. Weirdly, the more blades there are, they less close of a shave I get. I sometimes think they only put multiple blades in there to gum them up faster to sell new ones...

I'd love also to be able to shave with a cutthroat razor. Have a few friends who have learned for living history or actor CVs. I don't dare, though - I know I'd only inadvertently slice my own throat some Monday morning.

The next big thing is going to be settling on a new new shaving soap and aftershave balm when I run out of my last stock of Chap branded items now they've ended that range. That and their aftershave balm. I've not used actual aftershave since I got old enough to shave regularly; most products like that are too scented for my tastes. Might end up going back to just a rub with the alum block instead.

@Edward Cost of cartridges is probably the big driver for most. It became a big disincentive for me, but I'm also old and so I started shaving before disposables and cartridge systems, and there was the nostalgia of going back to it.

You would probably find that shaving with a straight is easy. I found the upkeep was more than I wanted to have to bother with. But it seems a lot of guys find the upkeep the best part of using a straight. They enjoy it. I'm not wired that way, however.

Be careful of acquisition disorders, unless it is too late. It hits guys differently. For some it is the softgoods, soaps and stuff. Others, it is the razors, or brushes. I have more brushes than I really need, but I haven't bought a new one in a couple years. I do have a lot of blades, however. There will be enough left over for the grandsons, probably.

Yes, stocking your favorite DE blades, shaving soaps and creams has also really become a thing, here in Germany. The availability in the street stores will be less and less.

Over here you can stll just about find soap and blades in a supermarket (one option each), but mostly it's a choice between an expensive heritage shop like Trumpers, or go online. Similar to pipes, really. That's the big advantage with the web; easier for a specialist business to find sufficient market for their niche when it is spread out like that.

I hear you on that. I have three brushes, one of which was a gift, but definitely got carried away with the handles in the early days. Managed to stsy away from buying any more than blades when run out in recent years, though. I suspect thst happened when the novelty wore off and it's "just how I shave" now.

Yes, indeed! As far as acquisition disorders go, It's probably too late for me. In just over a year's time, I've managed to accumulate enough different razors, brushes, soaps, aftershave splashes, and blades for every season and special event for the next several years. Probably time for me to ease off the accelerator for awhile, but I'm always eager to see everyone's recommendations for these products. Best regards!

Good, but this single Gillette blade is an exception from the usual gentleness.

Razorock 37 German slant
Nacet blade
Arko soap
Razorock "big bruce" synthetic brush
Brut aftershave

I love the Razorock. It's nice and aggressive without being overkill, like my Muhle R41 which I only use after not shaving for at least two days. I like the Nacets a lot, about the same feel as the Bic platinums. I am getting a little sick of the Arko soap, because I bought a ton of it, so I'll probably get something else soon to break up the monotony.
