I just saw this item on ebay and I thought that $112.59 (plus shipping and handling) was a bit on the exorbitant side. Is this a good deal? A reasonable price to pay? I realize that it is afterall an item of historical significance,....but is it THAT significant? [huh] Maybe to a select few, but for my money I would rather get something more practical.
I would hate to have that can in my collection when it suddenly pops open one day,......

I personally think thats WAAAAY too high. You can probably get one a LOT cheaper at an army surplus store or something... maybe. I don't know, it's a cool piece and all, but you could get a spectacular vintage suit for that price. I guess it's whatever you want though!

And the weirdest part of it is,....

....that you could probably get that same sort of item on ebay at another time and not pay near as much!
Oh, the cruel and fickle fates of ebay! :eusa_doh:

Please forgive me if this isn't a place the ladies are supposed to be but I am so new to this whole thing that I don't even know how to "post a new thread"! I just have a question for the gentlemen: Do men smoke pipes anymore? I remember my Dad always wore a very handsome hat and smoked a pipe--but I cannot even recall the last time I saw a pipe-smoker. (Also, please let me know if this is not a site I should be visiting.) Thanks.

Don't worry Etienne, dames are definitely allowed in the Fedora Lounge. It's you gals who have a space WE'RE not allowed (The Powder Room). To post a new thread (which I suggest you do for your query) just go into the appropriate forum, and right at the top will be a button labeled "New Thread". If you need any help, just PM me, or ask anyone else here, we're all willing to help. And welcome to the Lounge!!:eusa_clap

Thank you for your kind reply! I found some discussion of pipes already going on so I directed my question there. (But now I know how to get around a little better on this site, thanks to you!)

That auction is just another reminder that the definition of how much anything is worth is: the amount someone is willing to pay for it.

That day, in that auction, that's what it was worth.

Caveat emptor.

I suppose spam in Chile is like lutefisk(sp?) in Norway - when the children of immigrants go back to Norway, they are amazed that nobody eats this "traditional dish", when in fact the Norwegians only ate lutefisk because they couldn't afford anything else.

Is this off topic? Oh, well.

The Russians recieved millions of cans of SPAM as part of lend-lease in WW2, they ate a LOT of it. I think somebody told me that they were supplied with enough SPAM to give every Soviet citizen one can each day for the entire length of the war. It was a common site for soldiers on the front, not coincidentally. I wonder if there are old people in Russia who have a taste for the stuff and if it is sold there today in any great amount?

I guess it is now payback time - and they are showing no mercy. You see, my email account gets LOTS of SPAM that originates from Russia. :p

Monty Python Spam Song
Scene: A cafe. One table is occupied by a group of Vikings wearing horned helmets. Whenever the word "spam" is repeated, they begin singing and/or chanting. A man and his wife enter. The man is played by Eric Idle, the wife is played by Graham Chapman (in drag), and the waitress is played by Terry Jones, also in drag.

Man: You sit here, dear.
Wife: All right.
Man: Morning!
Waitress: Morning!
Man: Well, what've you got?
Waitress: Well, there's egg and bacon; egg sausage and bacon; egg and spam; egg bacon and spam; egg bacon sausage and spam; spam bacon sausage and spam; spam egg spam spam bacon and spam; spam sausage spam spam bacon spam tomato and spam;
Vikings: Spam spam spam spam...
Waitress: ...spam spam spam egg and spam; spam spam spam spam spam spam baked beans spam spam spam...
Vikings: Spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam!
Waitress: ...or Lobster Thermidor a Crevette with a mornay sauce served in a Provencale manner with shallots and aubergines garnished with truffle pate, brandy and with a fried egg on top and spam.
Wife: Have you got anything without spam?
Waitress: Well, there's spam egg sausage and spam, that's not got much spam in it.
Wife: I don't want ANY spam!
Man: Why can't she have egg bacon spam and sausage?
Wife: THAT'S got spam in it!
Man: Hasn't got as much spam in it as spam egg sausage and spam, has it?
Vikings: Spam spam spam spam... (Crescendo through next few lines...)
Wife: Could you do the egg bacon spam and sausage without the spam then?
Waitress: Urgghh!
Wife: What do you mean 'Urgghh'? I don't like spam!
Vikings: Lovely spam! Wonderful spam!
Waitress: Shut up!
Vikings: Lovely spam! Wonderful spam!
Waitress: Shut up! (Vikings stop) Bloody Vikings! You can't have egg bacon spam and sausage without the spam.
Wife: I don't like spam!
Man: Sshh, dear, don't cause a fuss. I'll have your spam. I love it. I'm having spam spam spam spam spam spam spam beaked beans spam spam spam and spam!
Vikings: Spam spam spam spam. Lovely spam! Wonderful spam!
Waitress: Shut up!! Baked beans are off.
Man: Well could I have her spam instead of the baked beans then?
Waitress: You mean spam spam spam spam spam spam... (but it is too late and the Vikings drown her words)
Vikings: Spam spam spam spam. Lovely spam! Wonderful spam! Spam spa-a-a-a-a-am spam spa-a-a-a-a-am spam. Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Spam spam spam spam!
