What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

Superman Returns (2006), starring Norwalk, IA's own Brandon Routh as the Man of Steel. Not bad for a frank homage to Richard Donner's series of 30 years ago, but not tremendously impressive either. Routh is a bit too much of a Boy Scout, and Kevin Spacey's Luthor lacks the casual *****m he is so good at portraying, but it looks good (especially Kate Bosworth) and it moves along. Supes' uniform still takes on a greenish cast when he flies - or maybe that's part of the homage.

Lois is married to someone else - he doesn't even kiss her.

I just finished watching "The Hurt Locker." What a joke! I found comments online from other EOD personnel who were in Iraq and they also said it was a joke. Waste of time, people. If you HAVE to see it, watch it online for free. It won't hurt so much then.

Kansas City Confidential, one of my favorite films noir. John Payne portrays Joe Rolfe, an ex-con who's framed for taking part in a armored car job in front of a bank. A piece of dialogue that is a favorite of mine comes from when police detective Andrews grills Rolfe about the robbery, stopping briefly to recount the latter's history:

Andrews: [Speaking about Rolfe]...left school to enlist with the engineers. Pretty good Soldier too! Bronze Star, Purple Heart!
Rolfe: Try and buy a cup of coffee with them!

Another one comes from a conversation between Rolfe and Helen Foster (Coleen Gray):

Rolfe: Look, you're a nice girl, but in case you're thinking of mothering me, forget it! I'm no stray dog you can pick up, and I like my neck without a collar. Now get lost!
Foster: Now I'm supposed to be hurt. Maybe even cry. But I won't. I think you're in trouble, and I'm going to help you.

And then there's the line Rolfe gives Tony Romano (Lee Van Cleef), one of the men involved in the armored car heist:

Rolfe: I know a sure cure for a nosebleed: a cold knife in the middle of the back.

Just Last Night

Don't know what made me look up K. Hepbern but found a movie with a ton of ladies in it~ Stage Door (1939). Great 'mood' fixer! Watched it on YouTube (thank you whomever designed youtube!it's my kinda place!)

Stage Door is a boarding house for women in NYC who are trying to become stars of the broadway shows!Ties in all the players involved in this 'house'
it was the fastest 2 hours!really intriguing! kinda the chick flick of '39!Ha!:eusa_clap

The White Ribbon

Saw "The White Ribbon" in Pasadena on Saturday...an excellent film, but not with a happy ending, or even an ending that necessarily makes sense. In fact, it was only afterward, discussing it with my friend, that I managed to put it together. It's a film I didn't much care for immediately, but it grows on me. Without even considering the plot, the production and acting is truly impressive.

This film is one of my favorites: I watched it on one of the local LA stations about twenty years ago. Johny Payne could be too likeable to come across as a tough loner, but he is solid in this.

One line I like, but I know I'm misquoting is when Payne confronts one of the thugs and says something like "Who tipped you to toss my room?"

Watched Assination Tango with Robert Duvall. Hit man goes to South American for a contract hit and takes up the tango. Entertaining.
Duvall is unreal.

Rather ashamed to admit it - but I watched Sophie's Choice for the first time today. Saw it for $5.99 at Safeway last night and bought it...since I'd been meaning to watch it forever. Watched it...recovered...turned on Turner Classic, and guess what's playing?

Los Abrazos Rotos (Broken Embraces) - a really disappointing movie from Almodovar - quite slow with undeveloped characters that just didn't engage.

We got about 2/3rds of the way thru The Seven Samurai Sunday evening.

GAAAHHHHH! You missed the best part!! I don't know how many late night video sessions I have had where I have thrown in Seven Samurai and had people fall asleep or leave just before the climactic "battle in the rain" at the end of the movie. I've seen it happen at theater showings as well. Something about the pacing of the movie and modern audiences I guess. Oh, well. If you haven't seen it before, do yourself a favor and go back to finish the film. The payoff at the end is well worth the effort.

Went and saw the new "Sherlock Holmes" with Downey Jnr and Jude Law last night at the flicks. Didn't like it much and my wife wasn't impressed either.
