My parents almost named me Dorothy and would have called me Dottie. Now that sounds pretty old fashioned.

Social Security has a great source for looking up popular names of any year. Unfortunately it shows that all my favorite girl names have become very popular. I like Emma (for my great aunt who died of TB in her 30s), Grace (Grace Kelly and Gracie Allen) and Olivia (after my great-grandmother Olive) but they are all in the top 20 right now.

I have long loved variations on Lillian (my grandmother's name) and was thinking of Lily Ann because my mother and I both have Ann as our middle name. Unfortunately that would make a daughter Lily Gildner
Opinions? Do you automatically think "gilded lily" when you see that? Or is that phrase so old, no one will think of it.

Oh my, that reminds me, there is a family here where I live, the Carr family...
Daughters: Mercedes and Nova (I'm really not joking).

My mothers maiden name is Washburn. Which doesn't make for a very good porn name.
Twinkle Washburn?

But it does tie in with the theme names. My husband plays guitar. We joke our kids will be Gibson, Gretschen and Rick(enbacker). : D

I actually kinda like Gibson. But how much would a daughter hate us for naming her for a guitar company?

Well, as for drinks, there is always Brandi -- I meet a lot of young women named that.

Is Martina close enough to Martini?

Tia Maria?

And, of course, the drink named after the gal: Margarita!!

Margarita

I have heard there are a few stories circulating as to how the Margarita got its name. The one I recall was this story:

There was a bartender in Mexico who had a girlfriend who entertained at the same bar. One night, there was an altercation that she got caught up in, some shots were fired and she was killed.

He mourned over her and later, mixed a new drink and named it after her in her honor: Margarita.

Anyone hear a different story than that?

Handles...

I suppose my vintage-esque name would have to be Gwendolyn E. Gray. Just something I like the sound of.... E for Eva :)

Sade Gavril... nothing raunchy about that one though...

my birth mother or the nuns at the orphanage (no lie) named me Laura -- I always assumed it was from the Gene Tierney flick. I've never had a quibble with it...

To continue the porn star name conversation, my name would be Lux Digua (Dee-a, as in "way"). It sounds more like a PI name to me than a porn star...

As for names, I've always been partial to Evelyn and Lydia.

My name is relatively modern - my mother picked it from Colleen McCullough's novel "The Thorn Birds".

I'd like a vintagey name like Joy (my middle name, & my Nana's name) or Charlotte, Virginia, or Adelaide, but I'm sure I would have been a Betty. :p

My "movie star name" would have been either Amy Ryan (plain), Quilly Ryan (???), or... er... Puppy Ryan. :p

Thanks BillyBob, it was on my shortlist along with Agnes Moorhead...

It's surprising how many Indian names and Italian names sound similar- same with other nations too. We just want to avoid Indian names like Pinky and Luvly...
We're thinking Bella and Marla, Gema, Pia(typical Danish name actually) ...
maybe Neroli....
I had a friend back in NZ, named his first daughter Caprice... nice name I thought- then came the second daughter, Chevelle.... hmmm... Malibu anyone?

We're possibly moving to Sweden later on, so have to allow for Swedish pronunciation too...

The Italian girl's name...CATALINA? I always thought that was a very lovely name. ROWAN is a nice Irish name (?)...:)
