Took a second whack at Woolton Pie. It actually had some flavor this time, since I substituted Gilfeather turnips for the rutabagas/Swedes and added leeks and lots of dried herbs.
It's still better with a bit of cheddar and some chutney, but they are no longer necessary to prevent desperation.
The Gilfeather is a traditional Vermont turnip that is very popular around here. The taste is quite interesting, a mix of sweet and peppery, like extremely mild horseradish.
