Would a real cravat work?

I was toying with the idea of finding a 19th century cravat (i.e., the long, thin linen wound multiple times around the neck and tied in the front into something like, but not quite, a bow tie) and trying it with a brown waistcoat.

I speak of something like what Victor Hugo is wearing here:

Only I'd go for a reddish, earthy tone rather than something so bright.

What do you gentlemen think? Retro bordering retrocentricity?

Could end up with an early-Victorian, Steampunk look to it, which would be cool. I think you'd need to go for a Victorian-type vibe to the outfit overall for it to work properly, but it certainly could work.
