I think Knob Creek is real nice, and I am not generally a fan of that kind of stuff. I like it with a bit of ice. Or not.

I began reading this thread and couldn't stop...very interesting and informative. I must say I didn't realize how unrefined I am. I'm embarrassed to say, I've never even heard of absinthe!

I love Woodchuck. Both, the Amber Draft Cider, and the Pear Draft Cider.

I'm going to try some of the better rums & whiskys mentioned. I do like rum and Coke, but haven't had anything better than Captain Morgan's.[huh]

I will warn you up front that it is not faint of wallet, but here goes - there is a liquor store that specialises in whisky and wine here in Calgary that apparently purchased a whole cask of 28 year Auchentoshan and paid to have it bottled. I will send you the link to the store if you like and they might be able to ship you a bottle. It is significant enough to them that if you buy a bottle, you get your name on a plaque that commemorates the bottling. They only got 156 bottles from the hogshead, and I think around half remain.

Here is the link to the whisky itself and here is the store's main site.

If you are interested in a bottle and cannot get them to ship to you, I might be able to help you out a bit.

If you do get a bottle, tell them that the owner of bottle #71 recommended it!

Cooper,

Welcome to the Lounge.

They have 24 bottles @ $318.00 + remaining and do not ship to the US. You do not have enough posts to PM so I'll check back here later.

Thanks,
Carter

ABSINTHE MAKES THE HEART GROW ...

I've had absinthe in Poland and Israel. In Krakow they pour it properlike with slotted spoon and sugar-cube and all. This is at a bar called Absinthe in the Kazimierz district, between the city center (Stare Miasto/Rynek Glowny) and the Podgorze district. Kazimierz has the extremely cool bars. It is the old Jewish part of the city, and there is still a synagogue which caters to tourists from Israel.

In Israel I had it at a beachside bar called the Ali Baba (!) at Nachsholim resort, a former kibbutz attached to an ancient Phoenician, Greek, Roman, and Ottoman port city called Tel Dor, where I was doing archaeology a few years back. Honestly, it tasted hardly different from Pernod.

I have always been a big fan of Jack Daniel's Old Number 7. Whether it be Black label, Gentleman or Single Barrel it makes no difference to me. I got the habit from my father and he from his father and so on. There is very little in this world that make me happier than a whiskey sour made with Jack.

Alas, I know very little about Scotch but I have a good friend who is willing to teach me.

My good fellow, you are in for a wonderful new experience. As I tell my students who have never read Petronius when they are about to for the first time in my class, "I envy you because it will all be new for you and it cannot be for me anymore."

I'm a complete newb when it somes to Scotch. I tried it for the first time a couple of weeks ago when I bought a bottle of Dewer's White Label. I drank nearly half the bottle on New Year's eve.

I can hear the groans but a man has to start somewhere.

A fine place (and time, for that matter) to start, as far as I am concerned.

Someone just gifted me a bottle of Lagavulin 16 year old scotch. It is has a wonderful flavor and is very smooth. I highly recommend it.

Lagavulin is a wonderful dram. I've got a bottle at the moment which I have put a large dent in ;)

It's been difficult to get though lately ever since the Japanese bought the distillery as most has been going over there. Buy it if you see it is my advice.

Ice or extreme cold kills the taste of scotch and malts.

Either neat or with a little water to "release the serpent" (as the Scots say).

A caveat - only buy it in case you like smokey whiskies. If you don't, you'll hate it and suspect it is so bad they had to add smoke flavouring in order to disguise the whisky.

Shaul-Ike Cohen is right. All the Islays are very peaty and hence smokey.

I personally love them, but if you don't like smokey stay well away.
