I wore my recently aquired Burberry classic trenchcoat in a heavy downpour yesterday, and it didn't take too long for the water to seep through on the sleeves, I was shocked because I've also got an Aquascutum, and that will keep you dry in the heaviest precipitation. Am I expecting too much, or should I apply the Scotchgard with abandon.

Well it's made of cotton. Unless you have on a waxed cotton or a rubber jacket, you won't keep out the rain.

According to all the old testimonials, the Burberry was supposed to keep out the cold and rain in the worst weather, as does my Aquascutum, which is cotton also I believe, albeit treated with whatever their secret formula is.
