2-5/8" brim. Unfortunately the ribbon was replaced during some cleaning. Felt is clean and beautiful. The sweatband is quite thin. Sold by Capper & Capper in Chicago.

I picked up this Cavanagh Homburg on Ebay a couple weeks ago. Being a greenhorn, I probably paid too much. But, as the saying goes, they don't make 'em like this anymore.
Charcoal with black grosgrain ribbon and brim trim. From extensive reading of this forum, I'm guessing late 50s-early 60s, but correct me if I'm wrong.
It's my size (7 3/8) but doesn't sit right on my head. Doesn't seem to sit down quite far enough. Maybe it's slightly the wrong oval for may head (though I can't find a marking indicating what type of oval it is). What's the solution for this? Should I have it blocked and stretched?
Another question: This is my first Homburg and it is quite a firm hat, in terms of the brim and inside the band--almost like a derby. Is this standard for a Homburg? (The crown, however, is not firm like that.)

If the hat was anything other than a regular oval, it would say so on the size tag. You could be a long oval, extra-long oval, or wide oval, it could be the wrong size for you, or it could have shrunk, though it doesn't look like it's seen much where, so that's probably not the case. Where on your head does feel tight, front and back, or on the sides? You could always purchase a wooden stretcher and slowly stretch it up to the needed size.
Yes, a homburg brim is typically stiff, though not quite as stiff and a derby, while the crown is softer for creasing purposes.

John Cavanagh's house in 1939. I believe it still exists today. It backs up to the Shorehaven Golf Club's course, which Cavanagh helped start.

Good morning, I'm an inadvertent member of the cavanagh club. I picked up a hat at an estate sale last year on a whim. Nice looking hat in a stetson hatbox and I couldn't pass it up. I've enjoyed reading everyone's posts and I'm trying to learn a bit more about the site and the different types of hats everyone is sporting here. The band is 2 inches tall and the rim is approx 2 1/2 inches wide. Of course I didn't try it on until I got home, it's a 7 1/2 and way too big for my gourd. I tried posting pictures, but I'm not allowed yet.
