Berets, Anyone?

I couldn't visualize the "rimless" design that so many berets have, so I will post some pictures in case someone else is wondering.

The edge of the material is thicker, reminiscent of a selvage effect.

This thickened edge is then folded under, as you can see in this picture: on the right side the material is turned up, revealing the "selvage" edge, and as you go left, the material folds under, creating the edge around the opening:

The resulting doubled edge that sits against your skin is almost 1/4 inch thick:

Note that I have edited these images to make the material more visible. The resulting colors are not correct.

If I get myself a Boneteria Auloronesa then I will post some closeups of that edge.

Strange - if I'm not logged in, all I see is the links. When I log in, the pictures are displayed in the posting.

If anybody can set me right on how to post picture here, then please do so. The only thing I could get to work was to add the pictures to some kind of media folder in this site. The pictures were then approved by moderators, and then I thought I posted them from that folder. As it turned out, links were entered, and now you tell me that you can't see the pictures. And you must be logged in to be able to post...

Glad you raise this issue, as it is a puzzle for me too. The only way I manage to post photo's is by pasting the url-link ("copy image address") after I have posted the pictures somewhere else previously (usually on The Beret Project or the shop). It's not too big a deal, but the downside is that I can't edit photo's (eg some appear massive, others tiny).
Any instructions much appreciated!

The 6th of February is Waitangi Day, New Zealands national holiday. The day commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, making New Zealand a part of the British Empire, guaranteeing Māori rights to their land and giving Māori the rights of British subjects. A good occasion to highlight the wearing of berets among Māori in this country that is otherwise not very beret-minded.
I can only guess why the beret has always been popular among Māori. The famous 28th Maori Battalion that served during WWII may have something to do with it; black and green military style berets are still very popular as headgear.

But also traditional Basque berets were popular, like on this vintage photo of a young boy wearing a beret on horseback in the Northland countryside:

or these Māori kids in the late 1940's (place and exact date not known):

New Zealand actually had it's own beret factory: Hills Hats in Wellington. The label still exist (under new ownership), but these days the "raw berets" are made in Pakistan and finished in New Zealand (by fitting the lining, headband and label in, they can claim "made in NZ").

However, until 1998 Hills Hats' berets were 100% New Zealand made; Basque, military and especially the blue berets for the United Nations.

A great icon for NZ beret wearing is Māori artist Ralph Hotere

while former Maori Party leader Tariana Turia is a rolemodel for a more politicized group of boineros.

A very different SPECIAL this week: a range of berets and foulards with one common feature -GREEN. A massive collection over a wide range of prices, all with a very good discount.

When I started South Pacific Berets, almost a decade ago now, I had only one green beret: the Berrueta made by Blancq-Olibet. It took years to sell the first batch of 12 pieces. Not only did I stock hardly any, they were very hard to source too!

Since then, much has changed; somehow, green has become the new black and I must stock over 25 different models of green berets these days. It has been a favourite colour for me ever since seeing No Man's Land (a film I must have watched at least 30 times by now!).

Boinas Tolosa Tupida in merino wool (30cm), cotton (31 and 35cm Plato Grande); the large boina Super Lujo in 314mm; Laulhere's Rafale model in 28cm; a variety of the superb Universels by Boneteria Auloronesa; the ultra comfortable Tartan lined Czech berets; the economic staple under the Hispano Basque label and for those in warmer climates the light Printemps berets made of recycled fibers.

Only for as long as the stock lasts for a limited time!

Ok then... I finally got the three pictures of my un-rimmed beret posted & visible. I edited the original post above. Whew!

I have been wearing the beret in rain, sleet and snow since my last post. It is finding its shape, with permanent ripples appearing along the edge.

One thing has surprised me - the color is a very blue kind of navy blue, particularly in direct sunlight. I may well end up with a black beret after all.

I find that the edge is slightly elastic, which suits me just fine. The front and back of my head are not parallel (who's is?) so the opening adjusts to wearing the beret more down on my forehead or more pushed back.

For those who own both a super lujo and a auloronesa: does the auloronesa give the feeling of a fixed size hat, or does it also stretch a bit?

Another, more subtle thing I notice almost daily... I have been wearing fedoras for years. They seem to intimidate some people... With the beret I keep getting smiles and eye contact!

The Aulonorosas stretch slightly after the string is adjusted.

I'm new to all this, so I can still indulge in flagrant denial... "I only want one beret that I will always wear". Mbaahaaahaaahaha

Well, having a beret "problem" would be cheaper than the leather jacket addiction in the other thread. I get the impression that some folks there have over a dozen $1000 jackets - and keep on buying!

Hi NoHorse, I have one of each in nearly the same sizes. I'd say, just to treat yourself, try an Auloronesa. It's exceptionally comfortable. Besides, having some choices is nice. Still, hard to go wrong with either one.

I agree with Foamy.I will suggest that you look at the Aulonorosa Casquettes as well.
I don't have a dog in the fight so I suggest you visit Daan's South Pacific Beret site;he has weekly sales.
