Aero Leather A-1

Hello folks, new to the forums and really enjoying.. I'm about to order an Aero Leather A-1, always wanted a flying jacket and I feel these have a slightly more modern look even though they're an older style. Does anyone have any hints or tips on this type and any photos? Keen to hear everyone's thoughts.

If you're thinking of a non-standard A-1, I'd consider the seal Vicenza and olive knits, that's a really nice combo. Also, have a look at a few vintage pics and find the sort of pocket positioning you fancy, then talk to Aero. As far as fit goes, I think they run small, I tried a 36 on a few years ago and the collar was pretty tight on me - I have a 14.5" neck, so I'm hardly a bull neck. So, again, I'd have a word with Aero, as they may have tweaked the pattern since then.

+1 on the colour combo. Not sure if Aero's olive knits are the most beautiful; the colour is a little drab. Real McCoy's do a beautiful dark seal Shinki/olive A-1.

The RM one is stunning, I tried it on in the Super Denim shop, Covent Garden, but the price? Ay yi yi yi! That said, I quite liked Aero's un-ostentatious olive knits, but I would also recommend their caramel ones, they go really well with seal leather.

I've likewise tried it there; I think they're getting sick of me.

I increasingly think it's worth just saving up for these beauties. Or visit Japan, which I'm trying to do.

These are great pics - thanks! No one makes one of these 1st-model A-1's with the woven-wool collars that I've yet seen. I've only run into one vintage example of this mega-rare type in my life and it wasn't O. D. in color, which continues to make me wonder if the original spec. citing O. D. capeskin was applied very limitedly, or even at all. More research in the archives is in order ...

Go with one of the the lighter weight and more flexible hides like Vicenza or goat . I would NOT recommend Aero's Horween FQHH for this jacket style. The A-1 is beautiful, and versatile. Good luck!

I too think it can fit in with modern clothing simply because it is different. Also the Aero Marine. I had one of Eastmans early A1 when they were made from horse. But the pockets on both are so small they are almost useless for anything as keys and phones etc give the look unsightly lumps and bumps.
For the non military look, personally I would delete the pencil pocket division on the A1 as with it the pocket could just about take a credit card.

A quick flick through Aero and Eastman's pages.
I favour the Aero marine for it's collar and no knit cuffs. Also Aero's A-1 features more choices of leathers though the Eastman is quite easy to wear from day 1, though being capeskin, it does not look as durable. But then again, no one puts their jackets though the rigours of 1930s everyday wear do they.

PS, never do the collar up on on the A1 either. It looks crap in my humble opinion.

I've always thought that doing-up the collar on an A-1 was for when you're caught in the rain etc.

I buttoned mine up once because it was cold, caught my reflection in a shop window and immediately unbuttoned it. I just thought it looked awful buttoned up but quite reasonable laying flat.

IMHO the seal Vicenza is the nicest skin bar none. The olive knits should go well with seal Vicenza. I think the terms "olive" and "olive drab" are used synonymously.

Thanks loads of info.. I've seen a custom aero a1 with a baseball jacket type collar that looks quite neat..

The RmC is my favorite. Even now with the olive/brown striped knits its pretty great.
