What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

The Professionals (on DVD), one of the last really great Hollywood westerns, made in 1966, starring Burt Lancaster and Lee Marvin. Not one that the critics rave about, but really solid, beautifully shot entertainment with great dialogue.

What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

Hitchcock's Saboteur. Very much a wartime propaganda piece and hamstrung by inadequate stars foisted on Hitch by Universal (Priscilla Lane and Robert Cummings), but the support cast is great as are several of the set pieces, particularly the climax on top of the Statue of Liberty. One wishes...

What Did You Drink Last Night?

I was drinking what we in England call 'real ale' last night - craft brewery stuff. One was called Olympian, to celebrate the London Olympics, the other (rather nicer) was called Slightly Foxed. To mu surprise I had to explain to everyone what that phrase meant! From there I was onto the spirits...

    Whiskey

My favourite single malt is a lovely 14 year-old Glenlivet I was given as a birthday present a few years ago. The two best blended whiskeys I've tried to date are Johnny Walker Black Label and Paddy, an Irish blend I picked up a bottle of on a trip to Southern Ireland. Quite hard to come by...

    Bourbon

Here in the UK Famous Grouse is regarded as a pretty standard blended scotch, but it's still several notches better than Bells, which is the standard one you get in bars and pubs in England. Tried Johnny Walker Black Label last week, as a belated tribute to a favourite writer, the late...

What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

Good choice - I'd love to watch that again tonight but I'm way too busy!

What was the last TV show you watched?

I love the way they lock Segal in a cupboard for half the film so that the proper actors can get on with their business. The last Tommy Lee Jones movie I watched was Black Moon Rising from 1986 - he really did used to look like a rock star back then!

The general decline in standards today

For what its worth, I agree with the ban on politics. I've been on boards where it's been allowed and after a while it's always caused arguments and bad feeling. Far better to stick to the interests we have in common.

What was the last TV show you watched?

I just watched the 1969 UFO episode Flight Path as part of a group viewing of a single episode over on the Fanderson forum. Great fun - first time I've done this sort of thing.

The general decline in standards today

The same sort of thing tends to happen unofficially with recent British Prime Ministers, who are not hugely well-salaried by the stardards of people running large corporations, never mind countries. Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair both set up foundations and have made millions since leaving...

    Yes, that's the chap.

What was the last TV show you watched?

Sandbaggers was the last really great British cold-war era spy series (and made in my hometown of Leeds). The story behind the show's ending is grimly appropriate as its creator, Ian Mackintosh, who was widely thought to have a background in the intelligence serivices, disappeared in July 1979...

What was the last TV show you watched?

Danger Man (or, to American audiences, Secret Agent). A cracking 1965 episode entitled 'English Lady Takes Ledgers'. I might dig out a Man in a Suitcase episode tonight.

What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

David Arnold is well worth seeing if you get the chance. It's just like watching one of your film-buff mates talk, then you remember they happen to be an incredibly talented film composer.

DEATHS ; Notable Passings; The Thread to Pay Last Respects

Interestingly for a series which seems to be so hard-wired into the American psyche, the Andy Griffith Show was never exported to the UK, unlike The Phil Silvers Show, which remained popular in the UK long after it had become a fading memory in America (we got re-runs for decades!). Those of...

What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

Funnily enough, I was at a live event where composer David Arnold was talking about the making of Independence Day, which was his first really big movie commission He told the audience that the filmmakers were fully aware that it was cliche-ridden satire, which everyone seemed to miss at the...

    British Hat Ads

Dunn & Co went into receivership in 1996, which was quite a shock at the time as they were a very highly thought of menswear retailer. I still have one of their straw boaters, bought from new in the early 1990s.

Looking for 1950s American Service Station Hat

Sorry I missed out on the replies to this thread, as I've been away for the weekend at an annual event where we visit sites where British 1960's TV shows such as The Avengers were filmed. Wow, some folks really wanted that hat - the bidding ended at $51.51.

Looking for 1950s American Service Station Hat

Ah yes, cab drivers! In fact, that's what occured to me when I first saw the picture. Meyer the Hatter's site looks amazing, but perhaps a bit rich for my blood. I'll have to look in Camden Market the next time I'm in London.
