Hey Shademaker,
Go to the Peters Brothers website at petersbros.com then click on Borsalino, scroll down to the Traveler, then click for the demo on folding your hat.
Great look, Riccardo
You would look very much at home here in Texas in that hat! A hat like that could get you elected governor and maybe even president, in years gone by.
Compliments from the Lone Star State!
Peters Bro is in Fort Worth
If you have the time, Peters Bros. is a great place to visit. The drawback is that is pretty much right down town in Fort Worth, which is thirty miles west of Dallas. Even if you are flying out of DFW rather than Love Field, it will be a fairly substantial drive...
they have great style
After finding a bargain and passing it on to Johnnysan on a Whippet that was too small for me, I have been on the lookout for another. I found one on eBay the other day (when two 7 5/8s ended within a few minutes of each other). Although not a bargain, the hat is a winner...
My sympathies to you and the seller! I really hate having stuff stolen from me, even if it is something I would freely give if just asked.
I also couldn't help but wonder if there were any hats traveling via UPS on the plane that had the cargo hold fire the other day. I was awaiting delivery...
you did good!
The larger sizes typically bring more money so I think you did pretty well. You need to get you a good hat brush and brush the devil out of that hat when it arrives, probably on the front porch!
I am not personally enamored with feathers, so I would remove them on arrival, but...
vintage Resistol
It looks much like an Open Road, but is a Resistol 3X Beaver, originally sold by Bluff's Westerner in Scottsbluff NE. I snagged it on eBay at a very reasonable price as a result of a fuzzy photo and a title of "western hat."
sweat band change?
It seems to me someone here suggested the date when Stetson sweatbands changed from the brown to the black. Sadly, I didn't write it down and have slept since then, so I can't recall it.
count me in, too
B.Bob I'm located about halfway between Varga and the D/FW metroplex as I calculate it. I'll be glad to meet someone in the metroplex area. You are right about Texas being a long drive: it is further from El Paso to Texarkana than from Texarkana to Chicago.
Dave
If I were to win the lottery it would be a major miracle since I don't play. But for the sake of argument, I think I would order a hat from Art then drive up there to pick it up in the Ferrari!
Now that would be a road trip. Of course, with the head room in a Ferrari, I would have to buy a...
Rain? what's that?
Just move to Texas and never worry about the rain! We are experiencing a terrible drought, as you may see from the national news coverage of the wildfires.
I also try to take a little better care of certain hats I own, but I'll wear fedoras with jeans any day. The...
don't fear "bashing"
I'm sorry I can't specifically address your questions about the Akurbra since I don't own one. However, don't worry about the creasing/bashing of any decent felt hat.
Here in Texas, some western hatters have fostered the notion that "hand creasing" a hat is an arcane bit...
Camels
I remember that the two-hump camel is called Bactrian because the two humps make a B.
The one-hump camel is a Dromedary because the one hump makes a D.
My own simple mnemonic device, although the topic of how many humps a camel has seldom comes up in most social circles. ;)
I am far from expert, but the liner, sweatband and tag look identical to a modern Borsalino I own. Mine is very, very soft felt with a whip-stitched brim and very straight crown, but I don't know the model name.
You will find some who denigrate modern Borsalinos, but I have been very pleased...
from gin-you-wine cowboy country
I can tell you that wearing a hat like that one could get you hurt, or least seriously ridiculed in these heah parts!:p
These elastic cords with a covered button are sometimes referred to as a "wind cords" or "wind trolley" by some. They were typically attached to the nicer quality hats and are still put on some Borsalino hats (and probably some others I don't know about). I would think they could be put on by...
BWear Caps
Do a thread search for B Wear caps. I think the thread was called 8-panel caps.
After hearing and seeing so many great reports, I just received my first BWear cap from Brett and have nothing but positive things to say. The cap was made to my specifications, is extremely well...
That looks to be a pristine example! I saw that one on eBay and looked longingly at it, wishing it were larger. :)
A great opportunity to wear a high quality hat at maybe 1/4 the price of something comparable in a modern one.
Congrats!
PS. As to age, that brim sure makes it look...
I'm glad that your new hat found a knowledgeable and happy home! The appearance of 7 5/8 and above hats seems to run in spurts on eBay. Sometimes I don't see any, then there will be several at once. Feast or famine.
Your tip about patience is right on the money, though. I have to curb my...
