Haven't been checking this page for months now.
I have to advise people not to use the water polishing method any more. I know my blog post about it (which I have been meaning to amend and re-write for ages but never get round to it through procrastination! In fact, I might just delete it as...
I haven't been hawking on eBay for some time as I seriously can't afford another one. Actually, if you do spot some gems from time to time (in a 7UK, 57cm), do give me a shout on Facebook or esoteric-mail in case I feel like bankrupting myself...
Anyone in London next Wednesday night may be interested in coming to see this:
http://chwolfenbloode.wordpress.com/2012/01/08/new-sheridan-club-talk-on-top-hats/
Does anyone have images of an actual potance frame and half blocks in the flesh? I only have an illustration...
BTW, a heads up as a conformateur and formillion is up for sale on eBay for £1000 at this point in time! Too bad I can't afford it!
Very good toppers you have there and I like the brown tip one! I would actually make a wider hatband for it as the very thin one doesn't suit it at all...
BTW, forgot to post images of the top hat bucket I bought a while back:
£150 (with key!)
The condition was okay. The leather was cracking so I applied some clear shoe polish to rehydrate the leather and now it is in good order. Also managed to get the locksmith to make an extra key (they...
Vintage Borsalino (1970/80s I'd say) from the vintage shop for a mere £12!
Was a size 58 but it has shrunk to a 57 (hence the runching of the sweat) so it fits perfectly for me!
I don't think you can post a link to an active eBay auction on this forum. You have to post it in a specific thread under certain specific conditions...
They use a thing called a half block which is fitted onto a potance frame that attaches to the table. There are several shapes for half blocks that slot into the frame: full bell, semi-bell and straight. There is also a tip block for blocking the tip.
Actually, these 'crowns' are called coronets and are indeed only worn at coronations after the Sovereign is crowned. At other times, Peers in parliamentary robes would wear bicornes (aka 'beaver hats') but the use is now limited to those who sit on Her Majesty's Commission as Lords Commissioners...
I've just notice that ATH are selling three hatters irons: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360401840495?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
These are not really for the brim (which would be curved) but are good for basic work.
Very sound approach, Andy. I say that the brim binding needs replacing because I have been told by Patey and Ascot Top Hats that the old ribbon would de damaged on removal (either because it is already worn or that the removal process would weaken it to the point of disintergration) but I cannot...
Actually, if you can find a hatter in America that has hat irons (the ones you have to heat on an open fire stove), you could attempt it. Probably be very tricky but if you have the merino (or silk serge) on hand plus the shellac solution (and guts) it would be interesting. You must make sure...
Note that there are various grades of fur plush. There's beaver (which I have an example of in form of a bicorne made in the 1930s) which is as black as silk but the nap line is more random and not dead straight as silk plush is. Christys' and Patey's use a different fur plush each. Lock's use...
My word, that hat is mint! Wear it with pride. BTW, may I use some of the images for my blog as I've never seen a nutria fur hat before now and it would be useful information.
In other news, I have discovered from a corresp. of mines that you can get pure silk grosgrain ribbon of exactly the...
