HBO orders series of Steve Buscemi starrer 'Boardwalk Empire'

HBO has ordered 11 episodes of Boardwalk Empire, a period drama starring Steve Buscemi and Dabney Coleman that’s executive produced by Martin Scorsese, Mark Wahlberg, and Terence Winter. Developed from a pilot written by Winter (The Sopranos) and directed by Scorsese, Empire is set in the early days of Prohibition and follows Nucky Thompson (Buscemi) and his corrupt reign over Atlantic City. The series is based on the book Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times and Corruption of Atlantic City, by Nelson Johnson.

The drama also stars Michael Pitt (The Village) and Kelly Macdonald (No Country For Old Men). The series, like the pilot, will be based in Brooklyn, NY. Production begins this fall for a 2010 premiere.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A nondescript parking lot here is the unlikely home for a re-created Atlantic City Boardwalk of the Roaring '20s, a key setting for Boardwalk Empire, a drama due next fall.

The series from Martin Scorsese, who directed the pilot, is part of a programming push by HBO, emerging from a slump since The Sopranos left town in 2007.

Boardwalk zeroes in on Enoch "Nucky" Johnson, a true-life figure whom writer/executive producer Terence Winter calls the town's "beloved treasurer. He was the guy who really ran everything."

To create the 300-foot-long set of Boardwalk Empire, sand was trucked in. "The building-it-from-scratch part is just complete fun," says production designer Bob Shaw.

New HBO show Boardwalk Empire.

My grandfather became an East Coast bootlegger to get by in the great depression; trying to feed the family after his father died. Came out here to build ships then worked oil rigs while my grandmother and great grandmother picked cotton in the California fields.

This new HBO show made me recall his stories of the past. I just hope it's not out there to glorify the damage the criminals of the day did when machine guns were rampant in the streets, and vicious criminals were considered heroes.

I know, I hope that doesn't happen. This article says they had a 50 million budget for just the first episode. Although I imagine once the sets are built, that would go down. It looks great though. The guy playing Capone was one that played Baby Face Nelson in the Public Enemies movie.

Could be great. At least it's HBO which gives a fighting chance that the scripts will be good, the acting good, and the sets and costumes decent. I'd be worried if it were NBC.

I worry. HBO has a habit of doing really lavish period productions and then canning then because they get too expensive.

I noticed that as well, what's up with that? I loved Deadwood and Carnivale and both were canceled because the productions were just too expensive. Doesn't HBO employ accountants?
