Yes, I play. I've been playing guitar since I was 12 years old. I picked up banjo soon after that, and eventually mandolin, dobro, steel guitar, upright bass, and piano/keyboards. In recent years I have become most associated with cigar box guitars and other homemade instruments, due to my founding a popular Cigar Box Guitar Festival.

I played in several rock bands in high school, and in a country band in my early 20s. I actually made most of my income from music throughout the 90s, playing professionally in a popular blues showband called The MudCats..

While I have worn all manner of headgear while performing, from top hats to fedoras, it was black newsboy caps and berets that became my trademark.

Me in the early 1980s, polished cotton suit, checkerboard Vans, guyliner and all.

Here's just a few gig photos from the last year or so. I always wear a hat. If its a Country gig I wear a western hat, if its a wine bar/restaurant its a dress hat, if its a blues/rock gig....I wear the hat that represents the mood im in before the gig.

Josh and Matt, these are great!!!
One of the best places for a sweet hat is onstage on a musician's head.

Normally my hat needs to wait backstage, at least for my full time gig, but on occasion they let it get closer. ;)
This was a couple years ago-- same type of collaboration with which I was involved last weekend (posted in the afield thread).

Thought I'd jump in here. I've been playing the guitar and writing music since I was a kid with dreams of becoming a rock star. I also play ukulele, dulcimer, and a little piano for my own amusement. In the early days I played in "garage bands" and toured the midwest in an old bread truck and without fail, wore an old fedora that my grandfather gave me. Goods times and fond memories. These days I play as a street musician on our local market square just for fun whenever the mood strikes me. In the last few years I have focused on building my own instruments from repurposed materials such as cigar and silverware boxes and making my own fedoras to go along with them. It wouldn't even seem natural to me to play music without a hat on my head. Here are pics of me with the "Cohibacaster" six string made from a Cohiba cigar box and one of my latest builds "The Gypsy", a six string resonator guitar made from an old silverware box.
