Non-Numeric Sizes

A question...

If a hat is described as Small, Medium, Large, etc... what does that mean in number terms? Is there a standard?

I haven't found a standard. If there is, it seems to vary quite a bit.

One thing it does tell you - the manufacturer didn't invest enough in it to size it carefully. That should tell you something about quality. But for a kick-around hat, that may be no problem.

Everytime I see hats listed as S,M,L,XL,or even XXL I know that they're not going to have my size. The only time I've found a hat that fit on that system was a Borsalino Doria Gruppo Ivy cap. I wonder why Borsalino won't make their fedoras sized as large as their caps? Too costly?

yeah- they all seem to run a bit different. I stay away from hats sized this way, but then again I usually stay away from new hats in general.
