Beautiful photo, Hadley - and amazing to think that it was taken in 1940!

I agree Warbaby!

The photo was taken by this gentleman, Russell Lee (1903-1986) in Pie Town New Mexico, in Oct 1940.

My contribution to this thread is this photograph from France. I'd guess it dates from the 1920s.

And yes, that is a bottle of absinthe.

I think most of these are from the Library of Congress American Memory website, but I've got tons that I've grabbed off the web over the years, so if any of these are yours, let me know!

These are probably common knowledge to most of you, but if there are any folks that are just getting into this, here are some great websites to get you started. Be prepared to spend a lifetime mining these, though...

Switzerland invading Italy, 1914

Mobilitazione-Bellinzona.jpg

Fearing Italy would invade the Ticino, the italian part of Switzerland, the Swiss army (colonel Keller head of the army in 1914) prepared an invasion of the northern part of Italy. He had planned to invade Italy all the way to Milan...

Thankfully, the Swiss government never gave an agreement to this foolish concept. :eusa_doh:
