Ain't the cowboy hat that we usually post here but certainly a western dress hat.

My second hat in a two-for-one deal on new old stock Baileys on eBay. This is a 5X (I think it is their lowest grade that is still all fur felt). This one is in a very dark brown and it’s destined for some reshaping.

It is exactly what I was expecting; a stiff slightly rough western in a boring shape. I’ll reshape it and if I still don’t care for it I’ll convert it into a rugged fedora. Can’t complain for $39

That's a good purchase. I guess you would cut the brim to convert it, have you done that before ? I wondered if the color would be the same on the edge if you trim it down .

I’ve trimmed a few and I’ve converted a few to fedoras. The thread the Conversion Corral is full of such examples. I bought a rounding jack for the purpose of trimming the brims. The color is solid throughout the felt so it’s a simple process. The bigger challenge is removing all remnants of the factory crease: reblocking is the best way but that requires removal of the sweat and is a bit of work sewing it back in.

As an aside, I’ve tried dyeing hats and have limited success but the color did not penetrate the full thincknes.

I’ve been watching this one for months and there has always been something that holds me back. If I knew it was a soft pliable hat like a vintage Open Road I’d bite. The seller states it appears unworn. Anyone have experience with one of these?

I’m searching the Other Open Roads thread too. It’s more than I want to spend on a shot in the dark.

The smudge on the low right of the photos was caused by a flaw in the original photographer’s lens.
