Tex Beneke and his Orchestra, one of the most under appreciated big bands, if you ask me.

Rita Cadillac -- C'est Fou
(It's Crazy)

Rita Cadillac is probably best known as Monique, the cabaret singer from the film Das Boot.

Reflecting the impossible heatwave that we've got around here at this current moment in time, I am listening to the Rhythmic Eight, coming live from 1929, with...

"Tain't No Sin" (To take off your skin, and dance around in your bones)

The Columbia University radio station ,WKCR FM, www.wkcr.org , is doing an all day tribute to the great jazz cornettist Bix Beiderbecke (1903 - 1932) today. Phil Schaap, the brilliant, but sometimes insufferably long winded (and I mean that in the nicest way) host and professor of jazz history, just gave a terrific 6 hour talk about Bix's life, interspersed with loads of music. One point he brought out was that Bix's family was MUCH more supportive of his work than the legend has it. The stories of his parents ignoring his accomplishments and never listening to his records are just plain bogus, which is nice to know.

In 1932, Lafayette meant:

a) a city in Louisiana
b) the man to whom the AEF said "...we are here"
c) a line of low-priced Nash automobiles
d) a manic early swing number played by Bennie Moten and his Orchestra
