The 1959-1960 crime TV show, Johnny Staccato, had some of the finest jazz/lounge music I've heard. I just bought the album on iTunes, and here is a good example of Elmer Bernstein's jazz:

Here is also the excellent opening to the show:

I've got to try to learn that last piece on the piano.

I have always loved this song. It's beautiful, deep, and very sad. It hits me even harder, knowing that he sang this at Buck Owens' funeral.

What am I listening to? Here’s the intro—now, can you guess the song? Little clue: Penny for your thoughts…

"A long time ago,
A million years BC,
The best things in life
Were absolutely free.
But no one appreciated
A sky that was always blue.
And no one congratulated
A moon that was always new.
So it was planned that they would vanish now and then,
And you must pay before you get them back again.
That's what storms were made for,
And you shouldn't be afraid for…"

Cheers, my friends…

Stan Freberg -- Heartbreak Hotel
That's Buck Owens on guitar in this Elvis parody.

Iowa - The Land That Stuff Forgot
Louder! And Funnier! - Coon-Sanders Nighthawks, 1927. Lots of fun in a jazz idiom. Followed by Wabash Blues (not the flipside...you never put both sides of a 78 on the same file...it angers the gods).

Al Jolson - The One I Love (Belongs to Somebody Else) 1924

One of my favorite Jolson recordings backed by Isham Jones and his Orchestra. Also with Isham Jones from 1924

California, Here I Come
featuring the song's composer Buddy da Silva on ukelele.

Bobby Bare -- Margie's At The Lincoln Park Inn

My name's in the paper
Where I took the Boy Scouts to hike
My hands are all dirty
From working on my little boy's bike
The preacher came by
And I talked for a minute with him
My wife's in the kitchen
And Margie's at the Lincoln Park Inn

And I know why she's there
I've been there before
But I made a promise
That I wouldn't cheat anymore
I tried to ignore it
But I know she's in there, my friend
My mind's on a number
And Margie's at the Lincoln Park Inn

Next Sunday it's my turn
To speak to the young people's class
They expect answers
To all of the questions they ask
What would they say
If I spoke on a modern day sin?
And all of the Margies
And all of the Lincoln Park Inns

The bike is all fixed
And my little boy is in bed asleep
His little old puppy
Is curled in a ball at my feet
My wife's baking cookies
To feed to the bridge club again
I'm almost out of cigarettes
And Margie's at the Lincoln Park Inn

And I know why she's there...
