I thought I'd add my "what is this" rather than starting another thread. This vase belonged to my grandmother, and she bought it at a junk store, or garage sale & never knew what it was for, and I came across it today & thought I'd see if anyone here would know. Is it for a grave?

The Fifth Army was indeed in the area of Italy around Florence in 1944 and 45. The inscription probably means 56th Quartermaster Battalion, Transport Company. It must somehow represent an American soldier buried in that part of Italy. Italy was a tough, ugly uphill battle. About a third of Alexander's forces were taken away from him to aid the thrust across France, so they had to fight with their hands tied behind their backs to a large degree against well entrenched German forces.
