Found this one the other day. Sleeves are too short, but it was in great shape, from a local shop, and a good price, so I couldn't pass it up.

Fashioned in Algora? Or is it just another word trying to sound like alpaca/angora? The camels seem to suggest neither.

Sold at Rubin's- Gottingen St.- which was once Halifax's shopping district and 2nd downtown. Now it's pretty depressed- lots of vacant buildings- a lot torn down, and hardly any shops.

I finally bought a double breasted overcoat today for $20 at Value Village (the thrift stores don't sell them during the summer, otherwise I would've bought one back then), I can't post a photo right now. However, I CAN give a description.

-Dark beige-ish color
-Wool & cashmere blend
-Length is slightly past the knee
-Four-on-two button style
-Peaked lapels
-One decorative button on each sleeve
-It has that little pocket for putting a pocket square in it

Is this coat okay for a 30's-40's impression? By the way, while I was at Value Village today I saw a really, really 30's looking overcoat in dark blue, unfortunately it was too big for me. It was six-on-two style and had the pockets sown on the coat instead of being inside the coat. It reminded me of this coat some guy was wearing at a downtown arts festival last weekend. When I asked him where he got it, he said it was made in 1940 and someone gave it to him. I was thinking, "OMG, IT'S ACTUALLY FROM THE 40'S!!!!"

I just ordered a Soviet reproduction of a WWII "Greatcoat" from Russia. Not sure how long this will take, but I'll post when it comes later in the year.

The coat has arrived and I noticed, that something is really wrong with it (wasn't expensive at least). Second photo is probably 60's or 70's springtime
coat from my grandad. Don't look at other clothing, I didn't have time to take another.

Excuse my curiosity, but what's wrong with the coat? It doesn't look bad, to me anyway. As Marc Chevalier suggested, it does indeed look as a former hassidic frock coat, so maybe it really has been modified (e.g. reduced from double to single breasted, or changed from right-over-left to left-over-right buttoning)?
But to me, it's just a little too long in the sleeves: nothing that can't be easily adjusted.
ciao! :)

Weird as it may sound, I consider hasidic men as an inspiration in style: classic (if sometimes demodè) clothing, sober colors... and hats!
Them, and those "plain people" of christian extraction (amish, mennonites... I even heard of "plain catholics" living somewhere!), but here these "plain christians" are non-existent, while I have met the seldomly hassidic man here in Italy
(obviously I met many of them in Israel... and New York! )

I myself don't believe in the possibility to "impose" one style of clothing as a successful strategy; impositions tend to generate the contrary impulse.
Still I admire their dedication to what is perceived as "modest" and conservative style, which in a way preserves them from the worsts of the high-street fashions.

ciao!

Hi,

I recently bought, from a charity (thrift) shop a heavy wool overcoat. It is bespoke with working cuff buttons, canvassed lining and was made in 1958 by London tailor. The lining was in poor shape and needed repair, the outer is a heavy dark blue or black wool with herringbone pattern. The original owner was involved in shipping in the north of England and needed a very warm coat, it is long, below the knee.
I'll try and post some pictures soon. The buttonhole even has the loop to hold a flower properly!
