Hi

I have an outlet Stetson and the ribbon is a little too low. This may be because I had to stretch a little bit.

Stretch marks right above the ribbon from pulling the the hat down onto the dome by the brim. It is a really snug fit! I may replace the ribbon with a wider one. Of course it will look like a totally different hat.

Btw, the hatshaper worked great on all my other Stetsons. Just thought I should add that.

Hoyt, I bought one in December and already I want to sell it. I have acquired two Borsalino Alessandrias--one vintage, the other modern, and I never wear the Modern Stratoliner anymore. It is a decent hat, don't get me wrong, but come on Hatco, give us a Strat that has the look of the older ones! I'm talking crown height and straight sides here.

I would look into the modern Alessandria from Bencraft if I were you, although they don't carry it in Silverbelly.

Confound you jbucklin! I took another look at the Alessandria on the Bencraft site. That taupe looks really nice. I'm goona have to rethink this now.Ah the fun of it all!

As a newbie, I've gotten interested in the modern Stratoliner by reading this thread. My local hat shop only had it in my size in black so they ordered a silverbelly for me from Stetson--it's supposed to take 4 to 6 weeks. Looking forward to the hat.

I've got a gray Strat that started out stock. I had a black 1 inch ribbon put on when I bought it. Didn't wear it. Put the original ribbon back on. Still didn't wear it. So, I had the hatter raise the crown a bit-I finally wore it today...Very nice!

I bought a silverbelly around when this hat was first released. Slightly too low of a crown, sure, but liked it enough! Then one day I was wearing it and it started raining a bit. Now the hat needs a reblock. A pulpy mess, it is. No more modern Stetsons for me.

I took my Caribou HatCo Stetson Stratoliner & used my Hat Shaper to take it to open crown by removing the liner, spraying it with distilled water & using a steam iron with a handkerchief between the felt & the iron...

I went to a teardrop with front pinch at 4.25". The back is 3.75"

Although the Hat Shaper helps with my Long Oval noggin, it is drying on my head to help coax it to more LO contours.
Here is the hat in factory form...

The subtle changes makes it certain this hat will get worn. The box & tag say 2.5" brim but all my measurements show 2 5/8" from the reed to the edge, another plus in my book.

How well does that hat shaper work? From that picture it looks good.

Well, I like the shape of that hat shaper crown and am looking to order one. I wear a 7 1/4, or 58cm (22.8 inches) long oval if I can find them.

Their medium is 23 inches, the small 22 1/2 . For shaping with the sweatband in what size should I get?

I got the straight-sided dome and am pretty sure that gtdean did as well. The 221/2" should work fine for you. Very nice folks at hatshapers.com btw. Give them a call and they will help you concerning size, etc.

Just ordered a new modern Strat, since I gave my old one to my dad. But now even if the ribbon is in the wrong place, I know a hatter who can move it for me.

I must be one of the few who likes the slight taper and the factory crease.

Are you saying you just got a dome shape, like an open crown, then use it to preserve the center dome and form the rest of the bash by hand?

If so I had not thought of doing that.

If I may interject, when you're creasing an open-crown hat, you don't really "retain" the dome, but when you steam the center (I use steam) and push it up it makes a dome all on its own pretty easily.
