I just ordered myself a couple of akubra's although I really wanted the federation deluxe from hats direct, I ended up buying a bluegrass green campdraft, and a squatter from Sam down in Melbourne, reason being just the price difference, the squatter and the campdraft both totalled about $215 dollars with postage the fed deluxe $190 on its own, so the choice in the end was obvious, especially with the great rap they get on the FL, plus Sam is such a nice guy to deal with.
It was funny out it worked out, I really wanted to treat myself as it's my birthday in a couple of weeks, and was desperate for a new hat, but I knew all I could afford was one, but about 6 weeks ago I purchased a 1940's suit off ebay the seller described it as good condition only needing a clean, and it would be good as new, well that couldn't be further from the truth, so needless to say I ended up having to deal with the notorious paypal.
Well I thought my money I payed for the suit was never going to be returned, even after I returned the suit, and some 6 weeks later, I finally received my refund, so I had that little bit extra to spend in my paypal account, before I finally said that's it with paypal no more and will close my account with them as they are just to difficult to deal with.
So I am super excited to get the campdraft, sam will ship it up to Sydney, on Monday, and there as you all may know is a three month wait, for the squatter. I will upload some images of me wearing it when it arrives.

My campdraft turned up this morning, just a day or two up from Melboure, Thanks Sam.. what a great hat, my first Akubra, surprisingly.
Here are a few pictures I just took for you all to see, had a go at my first bash, I like the teardrop bash slanted, with a tight pinch in the front, hopefully it will stay in that position. Cd 1.jpg cd 2.jpg cd 3.jpg cd 6.jpg cd 4.jpg

Rag and Bone Man,

Great hat and a great job on the bash! If the bash is the way you want it then hit it with a little steam. That will help hold the bash. I hope you enjoy the hat. A Campdraft is a great hat.

Thank you Sir.. I'll be honest most of the hats I have worn before are nowhere near as big as the campdraft so it was quite a shock, when I first tried it on, but it sure does grow on you. My only concern, and I am not that worried really, is the liner keeps falling out, after a deep bash to the top, the liner, won't stay still, and I have noticed its only loosely glued in on the side edges, so perhaps it may have to be removed, have others had the same problem with this.

I have never run into that problem myself. After I bash mine though I will take a ruler or something thin and tuck the liner into the creases of the bash to hold the liner up into the top of the crown. Also, on a couple of my Campdrafts that I wear during the hot months I have completely removed the liner because the plastic in the top can really hold the heat inside the hat. On those hats I just replaced the factory liner with a plain satin liner from www.hatsupply.com or just left them without a liner to help the hat breath.

Campdrafts are good hats. Congrats! I really like the crease you've put in, too.

You know, I was rewatching some episodes of the show Destination Truth. The crew were searching for some alleged cryptid in Australia and passed through Katoomba on their way. They stopped in a hat store and I was thrilled to see Akubras all around being tried on by the host. Unfortunately he eventually settled on some leather hat so we didn't get to see an Akubra in action deep in the wild.

Mate, I was in the shop about a couple of months ago, trying on a few hats, but came away empty handed, really wanted a fed deluxe, but decided the bills where more important, then finally cracked, and went with Sam from Everything Australian for the CD and Squatter just a treat for my birthday to myself. Katoomba what a lovely little town that is, very relaxed compared to Sydney, plenty of little antique shops coffee shops, and not far from one of NSW main attractions the blue mountains three sisters lookout.

My Akubra Cattleman has become an experiment. When I first got it, I felt is was too tight and didn't like how high on my head it sat. So I tried my hand at reshaping it and made the crown a little taller. Now that I have abused it a little bit, it feels a tad loose and I'm not sure I like the crown that high. Oh well, I'll get it figured out eventually, and if I don't, its an excuse to buy a different hat I guess.

Oh my. I was just checking out the Akubra web page and noticed the "Down Under" is no longer listed anymore. Anyone else notice a shift in the production? Other hats no longer available? Makes me want to baby mine a bit more.

Changes to be made to the Akubra range effective 1 October 2013. I do see a few favourite styles in the list, but likely not favourite colours. Most are western styles and black seems to be the colour that is falling by the wayside more the the other shades. I imagine retailors that have special agreements for certain styles or colours will continue on. With such a large number of styles offered, reducing the offereings will allow production to focus on their top sellers. Akubra also has a booming corporate business to fill as well as their increased orders for the military hats.
