Dad collected a lot of hats of varying sizes that are hardly or "ever" worn. Interesting that Dad's collection has continued to grow a bit during the clearout, with some appearing to be fairly recent etsy or bay purchases. I checked his sales for awhile but stopped some time ago.
Yeah, same seller had a pretty cool wide brim for sale. Two things in the listing made me chuckle.
One; It was a GIFT from an aunt. He said in an email to me at a later date that "Dad bought this when..."
Two; The close up of the label on the box showed the retail price that was $50 lower than the Buy it Now!
I made a reasonable offer, He said he "Sorry will not show this to Dad even!"

I am sure you could imagine my concern when this tiny box showed up at my door containing not 1.. not 2.. but THREE hats. This was like a clown car of hats!

It turned out fine for the most part. The seller had stuffed them inside each other like Russian nesting dolls and took a careful pulling apart. Only the ribbon of one was slight crumpled... but flattened out ok.

What was inside??

Crofut and Knapp Coronet Fifteen size 7 - which I found fairly unusual and very nice including a wind trolley and Cavanagh edge on a hat with such a narrow brim... about 1.5 inches

Second.... Dunlap Spaceweight. Stefan had posted his beautiful space/weight the other day and peaked my interest in what the felt was like on these. This one unfortunately does not have the super cool space themed liner or pin. No size tag... but measures out and fits right at 7 1/8. While cleaning it up I noticed a small snag/tear in the felt on the back of the crown. Will probably give a try at a little repair job on that.

The third hat was just a cheap recent women’s wool fedora from Forever 21. Looks fine for what it is though.

So maybe we will call this 2 hats and packing material [emoji12]

By the way... I brushed the heck out of these hats before taking photos.. and I thought they were looking pretty clean. but in the sun every spec of dust lit up like a Christmas tree. [emoji38]

Best,
Joe

I bumped an old thread, then started adding to it experimenting with "mending" felt. I've been meaning to update it, becausemy thinking on some of it has changed.
Since then I found a new Superglue product, their "Ultra Gel", which is supposed to stay flexible. I used it on a tear without even backing it with fabric, and am quite impressed.

i used it by squeezing out some gel on paper, then applying it to the torn edges of the felt with a toothpick. The tear was a separation, with fuzzy edges, so I glued it without much prep. I think on a cleaner cut I would use a needle to make the edges more ragged, for more bonding surface, so the felt fibers can interlock. And you can go very easy on the glue. It doesn't really soak into the felt much, so it's possible to get a mend that is not very noticeable.
I had been experimenting with PVA type glue, but it soaked into the felt and made a dark, "wet" looking bond.

YES....and DAD Does seem to have worn quite a range of sizes!!!!!!!!:eek::eek::eek::eek:
Perhaps he shaved his head once a year for the small sizes and let it grow the rest of the time.....changing up a hat size as needed while it grew back in....:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
Well, thanks to you gents intel work on this seller, I have properly noted to avoid him.

Here’s my newest. A linerless modern LL Bean Stetson for only 49.99
I could rob a liner out of one of my many undesirable modern stingies, but I may leave it this way for summer wear.
$12.00 shipping, but the woman boxed the hat in a really nice Tupperware cake safe!
Made the shipping price easy to bear.
Now I can have my cake and hat and eat it too! Wait....

I tried something new when stretching this hat from its 7 1/8 size to a 1/4 size. I took a very wet cloth and saturated the sweat band from the inside everywhere except the area around the rear seam. It worked very well.
Wish I’d have thought of that years ago...
Not wetting the seam keeps that area from wanting to rip out and causes the rest of the leather to want to stretch.
I use steam and a wooden turn buckle style stretcher. I tapered the square sides of the wood stretcher with a belt sander which really helped make a better stretch in my hats. Maybe y’all could try these things and see if it helps you.
I know someone’s going to want me to put this info in some other thread , but I don’t know how to find it.

I love this.

"An New older 1970s Stetson SilverBelly No.1 Quality Gentleman's Cowboy Hat. Dad and I agreed after watching those old Bonanza cowboy TV a series each Saturday that the Little Joe Cartwright going out to town or the impress the girl hat was this style, not a SilverBelly though.

This was probably the end of the soft shell hats that were No.1 Quality. The felt is supersoft and very thick. Today's rating would make it a 20-30X. No.1 Quality was their higher quality hat, made from Stetsons finest felts. They had NO 20X or 30X ratings back then.

These old ones were extremely well made!"
