There is Schott and then there is Schott. Sure, the regular Perfecto line can be a hit or miss but the high end models and colabs seem to be as good as anything out there.

Wow, what a stunner!! I'd kill for this jacket. What model is this?

Regarding the "H & M" posts -

They recently opened up a new store in our local mall. While any more activity in the mall is in fact welcomed, since so many are being turned into senior housing & car dealerships, I checked out thier store.

The "disposable products" theme could certianly be atttributed to some, if not most of the products. That said, I have had some really suprising finds in the past, such as 100% polyester T-shirts that are very breathable, and excellent for workouts. Some of these have lasted over 10 years, never faded, no stiching out of place. Sure, it not outerware, but it does still work. Otherwise, most of what I saw was trend only 3-month to 6-month life out in the real world.

Wonder if Schott will re-locate thier Chicago location to Woodfield mall instead? Might be a benefit in terms of foot traffic...?

Randy, it's a model 519 in brown. Also a masterpiece IMO. A pricey jacket but everyone who's handled one says the leather is out of this world.

Thank you sir! The leather does, all on it's own, suggest a sort amazement and wonder, bordering upon complete awe. Very nice indeed. :)

Apparently the cut is also superb. I think @ksozay has two of these? :D It's a beautiful jacket. Not too heavy, as well and not very short, 26" length.

IT's all hugely subjective, of course, but ten years ago, here in the UK you'd have paid maybe GBP350 for a 618 or 118, while the Aero equivalent would have been about GBP550. At that point, I felt the difference was about right. My 618 I bought used for a bit less than a Hercules brand jacket would be new now. I'm not convinced the standard SChotts are significantly better than the likes of Hercules, though if coruse you're always gonig to pay more for US manufacture.

Yeah and even here in the US a few years ago I thought was in a good position price wise. I just don't feel that way anymore. Now many of their jackets cost the same or even more than some Aeros which is pretty wild to me.

More interesting thread than the title suggested.

As far as the increased price vs quality of Schott, we’ve seen a similar thing happen in Australia with RM Williams. As companies move to use their good reputation to increase sales and spread to be a more internationally recognized brand they often seem to have to cut corners or reduce quality of materials used to meet production demands. Meanwhile their brand desirability allows higher prices to be asked.

As for the discussion about wearing leather jackets as we get older I must admit I feel a bit self conscious at 40 years old wearing my black leather jacket and tend to wear my brown jacket more for this reason. Living in a smaller town on Easter Australia (Kiama) the main people I see wearing leather jackets are tourists visiting on the weekends. As someone above described it’s usually cheap looking, ill-fitting, leather jackets worn by older guys with convertible Porsches, Mercs or Audis. Hoping I don’t look like that wearing mine.

Anyone else tend to move away from black as they get older? Or is it all in my head?

I’ll try and be more clear in what I was trying to say.

I have nothing against black leather jackets and think people of any age look great in black leather jackets. Some of the best looking jackets I’ve seen on TFL are black. I own a black Aero myself and love it.

I guess I just feel like when I wear it there’s a little voice in my head that black leather jackets suggest motorbike riders, rock n rollers, and rebels - none of which I really feel is a look that I can pull off. Probably nothing to do with age actually when I think more about it, and I might be the only one who thinks things like this. Maybe I just have to wear the black jacket more until it breaks in and feels more like me.

No offense meant to anyone here.

Black leather jacket is often less forgiving than brown, that's true. So many ill fitting ones out there, it's almost becoming associated with a lack of taste. But if you get it right, the right fit, style and of course leather, there's nothing cooler you can wear, at least in my opinion. I'd say with jackets, other colors are optional but the black leather jacket is an essential. Like that little black dress thing. There is no social occasion it won't get you through.

Totally agree which is why I bought a brown and a black at the same time. Felt I couldn’t get a brown until I owned a black jacket.

I'm hoping that I never end up lookingl ike one of those guys, but I suspect the likelihood that I'll never on an academic salary be able to afford an Audi, a Merc or a Porsche (even one of the 'fake' ones with the engine in the wrong end - 924/928/944, ha) will probably save me. ;)

I still wear black leathers now, only difference is I've broadened my tastes. When I was 15, the only leather jacket wasa "biker jacket", by which we meant a Perfecto type. First it was Alice Cooper I was emulating, then Joey Ramone, then Marlon Brando. By my early 30s, I thought it might be nice to have a different style I could more easily wear to the office; a cafe racer followed. Then I thought it might be nice to have "a brown one", something Indy-styled. Then I discovered this place... The short of it is that I've never felt nay need yet (at 45, 46 in September coming) to back off the black; I do wear black leather less often, but only because I also like to wear brown leather, oxblood leather, and so on.
