Percy Donald "Antilope" "Iller", 56 cm possibly mid 1950s. The paper label in the is for whole-seller Valentin Schick so probably sourced (see photo below). The Iller river flows into Ulm so Mayser might be the source. It was common to see fanciful British brand names used in West Germany during this time period. The Felt has a great Chamois finish and is very pliable so easily dry creases. Also has a really nice form and thinner ribbon bow design. This is the 7th and final hat of my recent find.

The first of a batch of hats I found or that arrived this week.
Stetson Lancer Premier in bronze colour. Made under license in Germany. Size 57 with the overwelt brim at 5,5cm and the crown at 10cm. It's not my size really, but this is a very attractive colour and I don't find Stetson hats, American or licensed, all that much, so I caved. Style looks very much like a Stetson in Mandarin colour I found for @Steve1857 a while back.

Borsalino in the colour sandalo. Size 60 (American 7 1/2) with the bound brim at 5,5cm and the crown at 11cm at the center dent. So considered a stingy in these parts but a quality hat by any standard. Nothing spectacular, but for posterity, completeness and because of the unusual colour it gets its place. Early to mid seventies for this one.
We're slowly raising the bar. This one could either go higher or lower in the ranking, depending on how its condition is weighed. No matter: here it is.
Mossant de Luxe perforated hat in size 57. Triple stitched brim at 6,5cm and crown at 9,5cm at the center dent. The moths seem to have been very disciplined, but did take some bites out of order of this one in their spare time. Very light weight at 84 grams and the sweatband had to be cut so as not to block the perforations. This is a cool hat.
I do wonder what the three grommets are for.

The first of a bunch of German and Austrian made hats I picked. I didn't make it to seven, like Steve @mayserwegener did, but still worthwhile (in fact I can guarantee it).
Echter Rockel Velour in dark grey with some distinct lilac tones to it. Very cool colour which is why it had to come. No label in this one unfortunately, but the liner was glued, so I'm guessing mid to late sixties. Bound brim at 6cm and crown at 11cm at the center dent. Rockel did know how to do velour and this one shows it. Weighs 110 grams.

Peschel in dark brown. Size 56 with the bound brim at 6,5cm and the crown at 10,5cm at the center dent. Label only says quality "K" and not much else. I love these Peschel hats, because they always have a great hand to the felt and this one is no exception. Wuld have been even nicer if it was a Chevret, but I'll take it. Couldn't find anything on Hut-Schneider to date it, but I'm guessing somewhere in the fifties.

Back to Germany. Whenever I go searching for vintage hats I find the highest number of Mayser and Wegener hats. Usually they are black homburgs and stingy brimmed seventies hats (especially from Wegener). I consider Mayser to be the better hatmaker, but Wegener did know how to get them right if they wanted to. For this one they wanted to.
Wegener Extra unlined in the colour Sylt. Size 58 with the bound brim at 7cm and the crown at 11cm at the center dent. Weighs 114 grams. I don't see that many unlined hats and certainly not by Wegener. The colours are great as well with the contrasting ribbon and brim binding, so I picked it up, even if it isn't my size.
Sold by Hut Wagner, Bahnhofstrasse 21, Limburg.

Counting down. Places two and three are a toss up, but an intermezzo is in order, so it's over to Italy.
Barbisio Rat Gondin in size 59 with the raw edge brim at 6cm and the crown at an impressive 12cm at the center dent. This one was likely to be worn brim up, but works just as well brim down. The proportion, shape, frayed bow and windcord without button point towards an earlier one. Using the name Rat Gondin also suggests that. The liner material is different from the usual silk and seems more fragile and there is a small tear in the liner. I'm thinking it was made around the WWII years.

FGM Bayerland quality "alba" velour in black. Size 57 (but has shrunk somewhat) with the brim at 7cm and the crown 11cm at the center dent. This is a substantial hat in every way and that won me over. Weighs 147 grams. FGM stands for Franz Gober München I believe and I have seen that @Garrett has posted one of these before. I think this one is older though.
Do I need another black velour hat? No, I don't, but if they're as cool as this one and have a 10 sharkgill bow it's impossible to leave it behind.

All pre-war Hückel velour hats are exceptional and I've handled a few, but this one is the best one yet. As a testimony to its quality: it made me buy a deep green hat without hesitation and it landed me in the Adolf Hitlerstrasse of all places.
Wait, what? The hat was sold by Hut-Trescher of Freiburg and in the years 1937 until the end of WWII one of their shops was located in the Adolf Hitlerstrasse. And it says so on the sweatband. So it's quite easy to date: late thirties or maybe early forties. Save for the imprint on the liner flaking off, the hat is in excellent shape.
As an act of defiance I did put a cross-shaped basting stitch in the backbow to make it lie flat. I like it better that way.

Lots of winners here! I love the proportions of the FGM (I had one too and Steve helped me identify it: Mark is the current owner). However, I can’t stop looking at this green hat; the felt mesmerizing!
