Can you beat that? Yes I can; last one and the undisputed number one of this batch.
Hückel Platin velours backbow in green (yes, green;)). Size 56 with the raw edge brim at 5,5cm and the crown at 10cm at the center dent, Weighs 114 grams. All pre-war Hückel velour hats are exceptional and I've handled a few, but this one is the best one yet. As a testimony to its quality: it made me buy a deep green hat without hesitation and it landed me in the Adolf Hitlerstrasse of all places.
Wait, what? The hat was sold by Hut-Trescher of Freiburg and in the years 1937 until the end of WWII one of their shops was located in the Adolf Hitlerstrasse. And it says so on the sweatband. So it's quite easy to date: late thirties or maybe early forties. Save for the imprint on the liner flaking off, the hat is in excellent shape.
As an act of defiance I did put a cross-shaped basting stitch in the backbow to make it lie flat. I like it better that way.

It's all about the felt, guys.
Stefan, Again, you had a really amazing hat hunt! JHS Velour is hard to beat. You can really see the quality (high density, tight clipped, high gloss).

Stefan, some absolutely fantastic finds. Why do most of the good hats end up in Holland :)

I'll be looking at those again and again this weekend, too.

Lots of winners here! I love the proportions of the FGM (I had one too and Steve helped me identify it: Mark is the current owner). However, I can’t stop looking at this green hat; the felt mesmerizing!
Thanks, Brent. It really is quite the hat. While undeniably very green it's also so dark in colour that it's almost subdued. Of all the hats I find myself handling the Hückel the most. That felt is really something else.

Thanks, Steve. I'll admit I was quite surprised at both the number and the quality of hats I found yesterday. Up untill now there was next to nothing to be found. Why Holland? It may have to do with some of the big players in secondhand clothing being located here.

Certainly a unique vent hole pattern on that one.

We're slowly raising the bar. This one could either go higher or lower in the ranking, depending on how its condition is weighed. No matter: here it is.
Mossant de Luxe perforated hat in size 57. Triple stitched brim at 6,5cm and crown at 9,5cm at the center dent. The moths seem to have been very disciplined, but did take some bites out of order of this one in their spare time. Very light weight at 84 grams and the sweatband had to be cut so as not to block the perforations. This is a cool hat.
I do wonder what the three grommets are for.

This certainly turned out even better than I expected. I see no evidence of it ever having been worn. The lighting does not show the true color, which is a rich charcoal, almost black.

Seller included the original sales receipt from 1964. 2 1/4” brim, 4 3/4” crown (maybe another 1/8” if you open the crown).

Hats so nice I had to look twice! Amazing array of hats, Stefan, but for you to rank a green hat the undisputed #1...;)

Burns Saddlery 8X Beaver. The felt color is “dirt.” It is quite nice and the heather look is cosmetic only as the hand is smooth and the felt is fairly soft for a western. The bound brim is 4” wide and the crown is just under 5 1/2 inches. The crown would ideally be taller, but the inside doesn’t touch my head as creased. I like the hat, the finish, and the color so much I’m thinking of having it reblocked with a taller crown and with a 3 1/2” brim. In the meantime, I’ll play around with different creases.

The brim shape is how it arrived and it won’t last long. I have never warmed to this style.

That would be two of us that hate that style. I've heard it referred to as a Taco hat and a rodeo hat. Our most famous hat shop in the Stockyards of OKC makes that style of hat, in any color and size.
