Bourbon Discussion Thread

I figured that I would create a thread for Bourbon, as there is one for Scotch.

What are your favorites and why? How do you prefer them? Are there any you hope to try?

I have Jim Beam Extra Aged that I got specifically for making Old Fashioned cocktails.

One I plan to get is Jefferson's Aged At Sea as a treat to myself upon completion of my final surgery. Has anyone tried it? If so, I am interested in your thoughts. - https://jeffersonsbourbon.com/jeffersons-ocean/

Good idea!

Imho Bourbon is highly underrated, especially by some Scotch-Snobs who never tried one.

Some decades ago the only Scotch widely available here have been those terrible blends like Johnny Walker RL, Ballentines... so i stuck to Bourbon (Wild Turkey, Jack Daniels...) or brandy instead.

Meanwhile I tried several Wild Turkeys, Blanton’s, Woodfords and JDs. Jim Beam has been less my cup of tea, so those Bakers, Bookers, Knob Creeks...are still kind of a white spot on my map.

Currently I’ve got a 15yo Indy-Heaven Hill open on my shelf, a Blanton’s SFTB, a WT Rare Breed and two 12yo Elijah Craig waiting to be opened in my arsenal.

I have a reasonably wide ranging whisky collection and I quite like JWalker. 15 year is preferred but naught wrong with good ol' JW Black. My wife was not a whisky drinker but on our trip to Scotland in 2019 she accompanied my visits....we never took the tour as it takes too long and cuts into drinking time and talking to the bartended is often more informative anyways. The result of her accompaniment is she now is a big whisky fan. We watched a Prime doc on the Bourbon trail and now she is hot to go tour Kentucky and sample the Bourbons. Not a bad outcome after all even if I have to share my whisky with her.

I tend to prefer it over Scotch, but then again I have always loved the flavors of Vanilla, Maple, Oak, and Caramel that seem to be prevalent with Bourbon.

I have been eyeing Knobb and Turkey to try. One that I did "sample", as I was given a shot to try, was Maker's Mark. I really did like that, and would like to invest in that as well. I bookmarked the site you posted to refer to. Thanks for that.

Trying some different names as shots in a bar first is a very good idea to avoid disappointments, I would highly recommend that.
Reading your above mentioned preferences you might possibly try a Woodford Reserve, Double Oaked if available, too.
Maple, Vanilla, Oak and Caramel galore, especially the Double Oaked, inexpensive in shops and a bit more beefy due to pot still distillation instead of column style as usual with Bourbon, even if that might possibly not be the doctrinal Bourbon theory.

Maker's Mark is my personal favorite; Wild Turkey 101-a rye caramel flavored is also good.

Woodford is a fine bourbon; the Double Oaked is amazing. It is rich and complex.

There’s always a bottle of Makers in my bar for old fashioneds and Juleps and I often try the top shelf stuff in bars.

There’s a bar in Athens that specialises in whisky and has a great collection of bourbons. My favourite way to enjoy them is in boilermakers with some beer on the side

Around Glyfada? Favorite place to hang. Bourbon I prefer over ice, simple neat.

My parents live in Glyfada and I lived there until uni, and then again from 2005-2010. Back then it was a pretty cool place to hang out, but it fizzled out after 2010. Still a great place to live, but all the fun places to hang out have moved to the center of Athens.

In the good old days a long, long time ago when it was safe to go out and socialize, if I went to a restaurant with a bar I always tried to get a Manhatten with Bookers. If they did not have Bookers then Knob Creek or Maker's Mark

Cannot imagine Glyfada anything but the choice place to be, center cut sirloin Athena notwithstanding.
Piraeus was another favorite haunt. All the Glyfada bars were memorable, I have been keen on returning
for a visit but recent events have cautioned patience.
