In a manner of speaking, consumers back then(without the internet) were much less educated than consumers of today. And the Sears catalog made life so much easier for the average consumer. How many of us today will spend several hours researching the "right" toaster to buy? Back then, you went to the Sears catalog or Sears store and were confident that no matter what you chose, it would be good.

Everyone who looked at a Sears catalog saw leather jackets. And in that sense, I think it sent a message that any man can wear one. And when malls were popular, one got exposed to leather jackets there, although the message was likely that they are most suited for young people. I sometimes wonder where the average Joe gets exposed to leather jackets today? And even if he does, websites often do not feature "average Joe" models that a middle-aged guy can relate to.

In so many of the old Sears ads, one finds clean cut guys wearing ties with their leather. It's not too often one sees ads today showing leather jackets with traditional business attire(though the definition of that is changing). I think some leather manufacturers strive for the edgy look, ie the homepage of Simmons Bilt

For the average consumer unfamiliar with leather jackets and insecure about what he wears, it potentially sends a message of "not for me." I think the days of the Sears catalog were arguably the Golden Age of leather jackets.
