I started late last year with a couple of new, stiff wool hats, added a crushable, and in short order found out about fur felt and the vintage market. Although I have a (slightly) large head, apparently a hard-to-get size, I'm more interested in trilby/stingys which aren't as popular, i.e., easier to get at affordable prices, than the wider-brimmed fedoras.
Here are my first two prizes (number three is on the way). Both needed a good brushing (lots of dust), and spent a couple of nights in the freezer for good measure.
First, a Warwick ("bench made"). Don't know much about this company, but I think it's from England. A bit tight, I stretched it. Good video online from JJ Hat Center in NY gave better instruction on stretching than most. I have no idea how old it is. Picked it up off Etsy.

Next, a Selentino Rose, from Czech Republic. Great color. 2008 (factory tag inside the sweat). This one I grabbed from Poshmark. Some discoloration on the front edge of the brim, gives the hat some extra character and brought the price waaaay down. I found small brown feather on the beach and stuck it in the ribbon. I had to look up what the button and string were about (wind trolley), and found a thread here at the lounge that cracked me up -- in the midst of a discussion about them someone wrote they were an "old-fashioned" look, to which one of you wits replied, "like anyone here is worried about looking old-fashioned!"

Hiya,
This looks like the place to introduce myself.
I've fancied the idea of wearing a Fedora for quite a while but was torn between not wanting to buy something cheap and it being a waste of money, or buying something a bit more expensive...and it being a waste of money.
Anyway, a friend is holding a themed Gangsters and Flappers party in the summer, so I revisited the idea as a good excuse to get myself into a Fedora.
After Googling for a while, I stumbled on an eBay seller, Try and Lilly who make the Linney brand - also only about 30 miles from where I live, in Liverpool (UK), and they have fur felt Fedoras at an absolute bargain prices of £16.99 - £20.99 with delivery...I now have three, the first was a tad too small, but I think I'll try to stretch it, and use it as a 'learner' hat.

So, I'll be around, probably more lurking to learn stuff more than posting for now.

If anyone is interested, this is the ebay link for the Linney that I now have:

Hi BigHat, welcome! The new ribbon looks just right on your nice Christie's fedora. I have a vintage fedora that needs a new ribbon something bad. I had a hard time finding a suitable ribbon last time I looked for one. Did you assemble the ribbon or is is store bought?

Thank you. I bought the ribbon and assembled it myself. Found a tutorial online and thought it looked reasonably straightforward. My wife is quite handy with a needle and thread so it was good to know she could bail me out if it went wrong.

I think I saw that hat recently for sale. It could be a hat made by a foreign company under license from Stetson. Are there any other markings on the sweatband? Can you provide clearer photos? It would also be helpful if you could fold the leather sweatband down and look for labels glued to the felt that is covered by the sweatband.

Looks like it was made in Germany under license from Stetson. I believe Mayser once held the license. Maybe @mayserwegener will shine some light on this: he is THE MAN when it comes to German hats. It might take him a few days to get back to you.
Yeah, I kinda hit the wall at it being German. Had read some information that things have been licensed under the Stetson name. Any information is good information

Already posted a couple of times in the What Hat Are You Wearing Today thread, but I figure I'd take the time to introduce myself here.
My name is Charles (Chas is easier to type though, so there's that out of the way). I live in Ontario, Canada (so my spelling may look a little odd to you sometimes). I'm 50 years old and bought my first fedora, brand new, in the early ninties. I've always loved 'old' movies and the way 'old men' dressed when I was growing up. I guess that's what prompted me to get my first 'proper' hat. Anyway if you want to see what I've been wearing the last couple of days go have a look in that other thread.
Cheers!

Good evening all! As others have stated in their intros, I’ve lurked off and on for several years. Because of poor follicle genetics, I’ve relegated myself to be a hat guy. I’ve mostly worn ball caps but I did try fedoras a few years ago, which is what led me to this site. However, traditional fedoras “didn’t take” so well. They just didn’t look right on me so I eventually went back to my ball caps. I think my personal lifestyle and usual dress attire call for a more dressed down look when it comes to hats. At 50 years old, I’ve become more concerned with protecting my head, face, ears, and neck from the harmful sun. Many, many years of playing golf and other outdoor activities and having my temple areas and ears and neck burnt to a crisp have persuaded me to try full brimmed hats again. I’ve recently discovered Akubras, which offer a more town and country style that I can get away with much easier in my small rural southern town. Not too cowboy and not too dressy.

Anyway, probably TMI for an intro…but I figured I’d make make myself known here as I will have questions about hat styles, shapes/shaping, modifications and such.

I’m a 7 1/8 or 57 LO. So far I own:
Banjo Paterson in heritage fawn
Angler in regency fawn
Lawson in Loden
Cattleman in bran
On order, Campdraft in sand. Very curious about this one as it is creeping back towards a traditional fedora. Hoping I can shape it to look a little more country, say, with both the front and back brim snapped down.

All of those hats are functional and can be worn with confidence in most all of my activities, if it’s going to church, running errands, or out for a night on the town with the Mrs.

I hope all have had a blessed Memorial Day. To my brothers and sisters who have served, THANK YOU!

Phil

Welcome Phil! My question to your intro above is, who said you didn't "look right" in your Fedoras? I bet you really do, sight unseen. But as you point out, there is a hat for every style. I hope you find styles that work for you.
Regards,
Will
Thanks for the comments! First, let me say I’ve seen a lot of fine looking fedora hats on this site. I really do like the the look and style of most all the hats I’ve seen here. As far as who told me they don’t look good on me, we’ll, I guess that’d be me . It’s probably more of a confidence thing as they are uncommon here and will draw attention and remarks. Not that they’re necessarily bad remarks but more of the G Man, Indiana Jones, or 40’s gangster variety lol. I’ve even been jokingly referred to as a pimp while wearing a fedora. The Akubra styles seem to blend in much better with my “style”; carhartt pants or jeans, boots, flannels for cool weather, or T shirts and polos in warm weather. The Campdraft I ordered will be more of a dress hat for times I dress up a little more than usual; church and date night, etc. Most importantly, full brim hats will give me the protection I need and I can look somewhat stylish at the same time. Win, win.
