Five Star Leather Jackets

Hello all,
I have a question regarding the quality of the leather. I was wondering if any of you has tried the Steerhide and Horsehide leather from 5*. I got the 1.2mm HH, but I’m not too impressed on the stiffness or quality, I’m even thinking at this price point it might be more worth it going for the 2.0mm steerhide. Can anybody back up the stiffness or quality of the cowhide? Is it even worth the money going for HH in 5* leather?

I don't think anyone here has tried the 2 mm steer.
If it's like the 2 mm HH, then it's definitely stiff.
But if you don't like the 1.2 mm HH, chances are you won't like the 2 mm either, even if it is stiffer.

Hi everybody

Planning my second jacket from Fivestar and I’m thinking of ordering this one in brown pull up horse. Any “pitfalls” with this pattern I should take into consideration before I order? I have all my measurements pretty much dialed in from my previous order. Thanks in advance.

My understanding is that what Five Star calls 'pull up' is simply russet. (What they call 'russet' is a milk chocolate brown.)

Thanks for the advices so far.

I actually have the collared Cafe’ racer in the 2mm steerhide. I’m new in this game so I don’t really have a lot to compare with. But it sure is sturdy. I did some rookie mistakes when I specified my measurements so it’s a bit snug around the forearms, waist and hem. Looks ok but not so comfortable to wear I’m afraid. Will try and wear it as much as possible now when autumn has arrived.

Have you posted any pictures of your jacket before? I do not remember.

I don’t like the 1.2mm because it’s too shapeless in my opinion the collar just crinkles like a bag. But I was wondering since it was steerhide, what was the difference in 5* standards.

Hey gang, ok I'm back with another harebrained idea...I'd love to take inspiration from this Sugarhill and create a custom western type 1 style trucker in an unlined leather. I really love the east west style of this jacket, and I might tweak some of the details to be a bit more wearable.

I'm thinking a lighter/softer leather so that the pleating can be done without adding a ton of weight, but with enough body to do justice to the workwear styling.

Does anyone have any advice for type of leather or other details I need to consider?

Anyone tried the “Reddish brown” goat that Fivestar offers on their page? I asked Shawn about it and he said it was “Conic” base with red waxes.

I’m gonna ask for “rounded shoulders” on my next order. Do you need to specify angles and such….? I will provide a picture I found in this thread that shows the difference between rounded and square.

What did you do exactly? Result is good in any case

Thanks!

Soaked in warm water for 20min, rolled it up in a towel to get most of the water out, tumble dry with towels for 10min, wore it around the house for an hour, let it dry on a hanger overnight.

I should probably condition it with something, huh

Received yesterday!
Very pleased with my Five Star Leather
Opted for the Seal brown horse hide A-2 WWII 1939 WERBER SPORTSWEAR
Shawn did a great job!
Compared to the QMI I have, this HH leather feels very nice out of the box.
Although the QMI is coming around nicely when worn almost daily in this colder weather.

Hi - here's my first 5Star. An Amelia Earhart Aviatrix with custum sizing in premium goat, seal brown.
Thx to MrProper ordering was straight forward. I am quite pleased with the result. I intentionally pushed the "extremes", relatively snug fit all around, relatively long arms and torso, since I planned this as an "guide piece" for future orders.

Consequently the jacket fits quite tight - but because of the rather soft leather it is not uncomfortable - I just can't fit a troyer underneath ;-).

What do you guys think?

I was never quite happy with the chunky buckles that came on my 5* Halfbelt, so I "updated" them :). I was at the local arts and crafts store the other day (Hobby Lobby) looking at some sewing notions for another project I'm working on and saw some 1 inch nickel rectangles that were similar to the ones on my vintage jacket. I think they were $2, so I figured I'd see if could make them work. When I got home, I annealed them with a torch and opened them up a little with some pliers. Next, I snipped off the old buckles, fit the new rings on and reclosed them. The torch darkened them a bit and brought out some coppery tones, but I think they look quite a lot like vintage ones. I think these are the ones I purchased, if anybody is interested in trying it themselves: Nickel Rings.
