Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

I'm thinking about where the issues go the other way. They are already asking crazy amounts for a hat they think is worth something because of where it was made (see example I gave above) or selling an inexpensive wool hat as beaver (not the other way around - you find that, take it home!). I rely on ignorant sellers who don't know their stuff as much as the next guy, but I also don't want to see pyrite sold as gold to ignorant buyers.

Those buyers already have a protection option through ebay to start a case of “not as advertised” and they have proof in hand.

Best example I remember was when a Seller listed his deceased uncle’s hat as a 1950 model because his mom remembered her brother buying the hat around that time. The Seller was contacted by someone who stated he was a “Fedora Lounge expert” & the hat could not be a 1950 because it had an OPS tag which wasn’t used until 1951. Did that really matter? What was the purpose? It was just ego. As BB said, don’t be that guy.

Except in cases of fraud, life is conducted under Caveat emptor.

I just fished a beautiful early/mid 40s midnight blue St. Regis in great shape out of the 'Bay and it arrived similar to this, care of Goodwill of Spokane. Oddly enough, they were overzealous in their attempt to pack it... it arrived in a box so stuffed with packing paper that the hat was crushed like yours. I think it will be fine with some steam and a little time to find its way back to its natural state, but geez!

Nice looking hat man, I'm sure it will turn out great.

I just fished a beautiful early/mid 40s midnight blue St. Regis in great shape out of the 'Bay and it arrived similar to this, care of Goodwill of Spokane. Oddly enough, they were overzealous in their attempt to pack it... it arrived in a box so stuffed with packing paper that the hat was crushed like yours. I think it will be fine with some steam and a little time to find its way back to its natural state, but geez!

Got a real pleasant surprise box today. Its a Resistol with no size listed in the advert. For $20 some dollars the felt looked decent so I took a chance. I knew the sweatband was toast going in, but thats a non issue to me.

The felt is surprisingly soft and supple. Definately furfelt and NOT wool. Did find a tag under the sweat that id's it as a 7-1/8. Its a really loose 7-1/8, so Ill have no problem rehabbing and reblocking it into a proper 7-1/4. 5-1/2" crown, 3-1/2" brim. The cherry on top of this deal is that if you look closely at the worn sweatband, you can see embossing as a "Clear Beaver 50". Once upon a time this may have been a nice hat ( and will be again soon). a couple minor nibbles scattered around, but a 3/4" ribbon will cover most of them just fine.. Im thinking a 3/4" ribbon with a campaign bow. Glad I took a chance on it for sure! Little bit of cleaning and it going to be a nice one

Guess Ive been too lucky with Ebay and the USPS lately. Things have been getting here quickly and with no issues recently. Today a hat that was supposed to arrive today magically decided to go from Dallas Texas to East Texas via Knoxville Tennessee lol. Guess it wont be gracing my doorstep for a few more days

Like I get it, you have this hat that you have no idea about and I guess eBay is suggesting descriptions for the listings using AI, but did you even read it to make sure it made any sense? How does the random use of a word that doesn't exist (but oddly enough happens to be the name of an eBay seller as I'm sure you're all aware) not make you think perhaps you should at least edit out that part? People are either ignorant or really lazy!

WOW! That is crazy. eBay's AI truly is terrible for selling hats anyway, but that's a new low (for both the seller and eBay).

Question open to all - when perusing the 'bay or other sites where hats are bought and sold, do you feel any responsibility to reach out to the seller with knowledge you may have about a hat or hat brand that may be (most often unknowingly) misrepresented in the listing? An example I just came across is a hat brand that misrepresents itself as being made in Italy, but it's actually Hungarian-made. The seller would never know that and some unwilling buyer may jump at the hat. Should I offer my information unsolicited? Would you?

E-Bay Hat Karens.... Who would even have the time to do that?!?!?!?!?!?

I’ve been on the lookout for one of the Stetson sheriff pin/clips for quite some time to no avail. I finally came across this charm with the same design. It doesn’t have the clip on the back for attaching to the ribbon, just a little loop. I figured I could surely figure a way to attach it to the hat with thread being I havnt located a real one since I’ve been looking at least a few years.

Congratulations Joe!!! It is always best to get a real one. I have found most of the others (the charms) are a little too big for the job. I have a couple of those and use them for watch chain fobs.

Life dangled another shiny thing in front of my eyes and tempted me too much. I just HAD to get it. A really nice price and buy it now option with really reasonable shipping. A nice older Resistol Fedora. Supposed to be my size and it looks to be in nice condition... hopefully its a 7-1/4 and not a 6-1/4! cant wait till it gets here! Hopefully NOT crammed into an envelops lol
