The hats that came in last week. First one.
Berteil fedora in a brown colour called terranova. Size according to the label is 59, but it's not even close to that. Very lightweight (71 grams) and soft felt and the label betrays who the maker was: Barbisio. Both the size label and the colour label are the same as Barbisio used, only their name is missing.

Next one was part of two hat deal.
Panizza Special Misto fedora in grey. Size 57 with the overwelt brim at 5,5cm and the crown at 10cm at the center dent. Nice shape and what seems to be a mix of fur and wool for the felt. No labels inside the hat unfortunately.

Second one of the duo.
Panizza fedora in a grey colour aclled Grafite. Size 57 with the overwelt brim at 6cm and the crown at 10,5cm at the center dent. Great shape and proportion but again fairly sturdy felt with a rougher hand (ruvido in Italian). The finishing on the hat is excellent with a lovely shark gill bow.

Hückel Special unlined fedora in brown. Size 58 (damn) with the raw edge brim at 6,5cm and the crown open for now (couldn't bring myself to crease it after steaming). Wonderful hand to the felt as expected from Hückel. Great shape and proportions. Now why couldn't it just be my size as the seller said it was?

Herbert Johnson - Soft Bowler
Warm Grey Felt
4 1/2 Soft Round Crown
d'Orsay Curl Brim 1 7/8 front/back 1 1/2 Sides
1 inch charcoal grosgrain ribbon
As our friend/lounge alumni Brent has said.. “sometime a hat just speaks to me” That was certainly the case with this Herbert Johnson soft bowler. It caught my attention with its warm toned grey felt and darker charcoal binding on its d'Orsay Curl Brim. Based on its pictures I was kinda envisioning a bit more of a soft homburg kinda crown but in person it is in fact a bowler shaped crown but still soft and shapeable. I imagine at a time when soft felts were becoming more and more popular while stiff felts/bowlers were still a bit of a standard especially in the British market this Soft Bowler made for a bit of a crossover. That said.. I’m quite pleased with it for two reasons… first it finally checks off the box of grey bowler. Second… the Soft Bowler designation makes it quite an interesting piece, an example of which I had not come across previously. And it’s a Herbert Johnson to boot. I’m no expert on dating HJ hats but the 38 New Bond Street puts it squarely in the rather broad range of 1895 and 1975. The notation on the liner By Appointment to Her Royal Majesty The Queen Royal Hatters puts us about 1953 or later. It certainly looks like the quality of hats we often see from the 1950s so that would be my guess. If you’ve ever had the urge to reach up and squeeze a pinch in the front of a bowler… this is the hat for you!
I've been delinquent in posting a bevy of new hats, but this one came in the other day and was so nice that I felt compelled to snap some pics and post it. Of course then the site decided to stop functioning and I haven't been able to until today.
It's a Dobbs from the early 40s, based on the roundel in the liner and the embossment on the sweatband. Marked size 7 on the re-order tag but 7 1/8 on the sweatband and measures as such. Unreeded, lightweight felt in a beautiful tan color with brown ribbon and a cavanaugh edge, 2 3/8" brim, 5 5/8" crown.
I'm just under a 7 1/4 in size and I may try to stretch it up to fit, although it's in such beautiful shape it seems like it might be best to just sell it on to someone who it would fit perfectly to begin with.

Alright, here we go. First big boy hat. Optimo fedora something or other off of Poshmark. Really clean, and it fits wonderfully, thank the lord. Just getting a feel for it so far. Not sure how I want it creased, etc., and I’m open to suggestions. I’ll post some close up shots when I get it brushed up. What do you guys think?

I bought this hat from V&D (Vroom & Dreesmann). V&D is a very well-known department store in the Netherlands that went bankrupt a few years ago. Unfortunately, the hat was sold as size 58, but the label clearly says 56. So it’s way too small for me. It's an oldie, maybe made by Mayser or Hückel. But according to the union label i think it's made in England? Really like the form and color combination.This hat is going to @steur Stefan.
