How do I "break in" heavy horsehide?

I used a 50/50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and distilled water to soak my new lost worlds HH jacket and then wore it. I also wore it in the rain which was easy to do since it was rainy season when I got it and it only took a couple of wears to feel reasonably comfortable.

    Recommend a stretcher

After a little research, I purchased a new four way hat stretcher. It wasn't cheap ($90?) but has a done a good job on the hats that I've used it on and I haven't gotten the long oval experience.

It looks like a shiny green (a little iridescent) rayon (?) material. Is there somewhere that you know that I might source material like this to bring it to as near new...

    Hat Stores-a list

There is another good store that I know of - in San Leandro on MacArthur Blvd...for those who have an automobile (no easy BART access). It's called Top Hatters and really has a wonderful selection of hats and at very reasonable prices. Now for the fly in the ointment - the couple who run it are...

    Hat Stores-a list

Paul's Hat shop is on Geary Blvd and I've heard that it's nice but haven't been there personally. If you get out of San Francisco (BART subway) there's a good hat shop in Oakland right at the 19th ST BART station. The store is Hat Guys and they are friendly and have a wonderful selection of...

Ask a question, get an answer

I'm new at hats and working with them so...are you thinking that water might activate a stiffener already in the hat which steam didn't activate? I had heard that you needed steam but as I said, there's a lot that I don't know yet.
