Plot summary

I have never heard of this film, don't remember it in theaters, so maybe it went out on DVD? I checkd the cast, and they are relatively unknown (I did not recognize any of the cast).

Here's the plot:
"In a daring attempt to end the war by Christmas, Winston Churchill and the British High Command hatch an extraordinary plan - Operation Market Garden. 35,000 British troops are dropped behind enemy lines in German occupied Holland. In the midst of the largest airborne invasion in history, one small unit of men, codename "Matchbox" has it's own agenda. When Matchbox are shot down short of their landing zone, the odds of their success seem hopeless. Seven very different British soldiers find themselves separated from the Allied invasion, on a collision course with three renegade German soldiers who also want to lay claim to the horde."

Let me know if it is worth seeing!

Plot Summary: The Fallen

Here is the second film, again I haven't heard of it until today.

"

Plot Summary for
The Fallen (2005)

THE FALLEN is a three-sided story about German, Italian, and American soldiers, set in Northern Italy during the final weeks of the World War II. On the one side, a group of American supply soldiers delivers ammunition to the front line, a journey that becomes a descent into hell, the success of the mission becomes less likely with every setback. On the other, a doomed German unit and their ragtag Italian partners struggle to maintain morale and discipline amongst their beleaguered troops in the face of certain defeat. Torn between these are the divided loyalties of the Italians, both fascist soldiers and communist partisans, who have turned brother against brother in a bloody civil war. The film looks at the everyday life of the soldiers, their encounters on the road, their hopes and dreams, and the differences in values, morals, and patriotism between the cultures at the end of that era.

Ari Taub's gritty World War II drama, set after the tide had turned on the Axis powers in 1944, chronicles the conflict through the eyes of an ill-fated unit of German soldiers and their disheveled Italian allies. Shot on location in Italy, the film boasts a unique cinematic style that evokes the feeling of authentic newsreel footage, focusing on the drama of human emotion rather than the spectacle of violent warfare.

Really? The Lat Drop has Billy Zane(the Phantom) and Michael Madsen (Mulholland Falls). I had heard about it earlier this year, The fallen I saw while browsing new releases.

Thanks

Had not seen these either. Both added to my list.

I'm at the end of my two-week Netflix trial. The first shipments were VERY fast, now it's taking 2 - 3 days.
Still, great service. I was getting eaten alive in late fees with the locals.

I just purchased 'The Downfall' a recent German film about Hitler's last days down in the Berlin bunker. I'm moving this weekend so I may not get to it for a while, but I'm certainly looking forward to it.

I agree, after the opening, I lost interest in the film. I seemed to wander too much. I was hoping for more of a "Kellys Heroes" type of film. ...Jake

Hey all -

I'm a newbie here, but I thought I'd go ahead and jump in if no one minds. :)

I'm definitely going to have to check these two out. Memorial Day is coming up and I'll be watching my annual movie - The Longest Day - since I don't have cable. But I need a few other flicks to get me through the day.

I would almost pay $50 a month just to have TCM, though!

Has anyone seen Eye of the Needle with Donald Sutherland? I read the book, but didn't know if the movie was worth watching or not.

Hi Melissa,

I saw Eye of the Needle several years ago and it's pretty good. Not a lot of battlefield scenes but still good nonetheless. There are some quite suspenseful parts near the end, but I won't ruin it for you.

Here is another interesting looking one.

In this drama based on the play by Martin Sherman (who also wrote the screenplay), a Berlin homosexual is caught up in the Nazi hysteria during World War II. After being forced to kill his lover, he's placed in a concentration camp and lies to get himself classified as Jewish rather than gay. But several rule-breaking incidents and his love for a fellow male prisoner bring him to admit his true nature. Mick Jagger appears briefly as a drag queen

I'll watch it. it seems intriguing.

Set amidst the war is a Russian movie called Kukushka (Cuckoo) that is pretty good. It ain't about actual warfare, though. It is about a Finnish soldier and a Russian soldier marooned together during the war.
