recent purchases: lace dress, repro jumper and vintage cut out shoes - would you say 30's or 40's? seller said 40's and they might very well know better, but i thought they are perhaps earlier?

Daisy, I'd say the dress is late 30s and the shoes, well could be either 30s or 40s.
Many shoe styles didn't change that much from the later 30s until after the War. I have shoes that look very 30s that I know from the label are 40s due to Utility mark or change of name such as Red Cross Shoe Company changed to Gold Cross in Wartime to avoid confusion with the medical Red Cross.
The dress is very pretty on you.

My husband went for a hair cut and I saw this by the front door of the barber shop. I asked them why it was outside and they said they were throwing it out. "Does it work?" "Oh ya!" "I'll be right back!!!!!" So I got truck and took it home.
The ashtray on the arm rest really cracks me up. I checked the brand and the trademark was registered in the mid 70s. I'm going to set it up in my basement rec room which is also my sewing room. A conversation piece and a life-saver on those days when I can't wait for my set to air dry. I'm not sure what to do about the back. It's so ugly! I think that foamy stuff is supposed to be there but it's so dirty and it's too frail to wash. At first I thought it was build up, like dryer lint. What should I do? Should I brush it all off and then try to re-foam it?

Marie-Anne,
This dryer will be great for you, you may find that you use it more than you think. These are great for steam conditioning your hair, and warming up small animals and little kids after their baths.
I would take the back panel off, and blast it with the garden hose. Most of the foam should come off, then replace it with similar foam or fine window screening.
