I finally found another suit today...3 button Chaps suit, $12 at Goodwill, it's a solid charcoal gray, had a church bulletin in the pocket, looks like new. I realize it's not a super duper article of clothing, but it'll be great for wearing to work. A woman was walking around with it, along with 2 other suits. She saw that I was wearing a suit, and asked me about sizing...her son needs a suit for some event, and wears a 42L...this was a 48R so I told her it's way too big for her son, but it'll fit me just fine.

a good week.
A vintage Burberry suit (60s I think).
A nice classic check dress shirt by Ike Behar.
A classic solid color tie in good condition.
A vintage tie I like.
A classic blue stripe tie.
A pair of nice brown wool pants.
2 blazers (1980s for one I think but still good for night use).

That excuse won't fly when their are desperate Loungers out there with real needs and you obviously need the cash....rob a bank, do some break and enters ...whatever... but letting NOS Wright Arch preservers go is the real criminal act IMHO.

Cookie, I was waiting for someone to comment on that post. The shoes were gone when I went back this past week. I found a thrift store in a predominantly hispanic neighborhood near the airport that had oodles of cool shoes and suits, but none that fit me. I need to go there this week and take another look...

I would hit them now with some light applications of black polish to give them some antiquing/patina. The famous Churchs cherry reds always got polished with black and they developed a magnificent colouring.

Actually, they are very dark compared to the photograph. I believe some dark brown polish would make 'em look even better. I'll try using black though, since that's all I've got anyway's.

I hope you don't mind a lady posting here!

Just today I found in my local Oxfam charity shop:
A handmade 3 button lightweight tweed 50's-early 60's suit in a fabulous brown, gold and green mix
A handmade 2 button very early 50's/60's suit in a beautiful light brown stripe with golds and greens (very George Melly)
I bought both on spec for my husband, and they fit as if they were made for him! Beautiful quality, unusual fabrics, and £27 for the two!
And to top it off, on the way out I spotted 2 Fox frame unbrellas (one ladies, one gents), fair vintage condition, for £5 each. Overall, a great day.
I'll post some photos of the suits when they are back from the cleaners.

Just scored a navy blue pin stripe double breasted suit at the Goodwill in Downtown LA. By Alan Flusser, it is a classic drape suit, with all of the classic/bespoke details he is noted for. Fits very well, minor alterations may be required--a seriously good suit. All for $20!

The first is either from Saks or Flusser's custom shop, and is very good quality. The latter two are Flusser's diffusion line from Stein Mart--not good quality at all.

No, an even earlier label of his the shows a bowler and a walking stick--from the 80s. I bought several of his things back then at the Robinson's in Beverly Hills and still have a pair of white flannels. The suit I got is exactly as described by Patrick Bateman, primary character in Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho:

“The suit I wear today is from Alan Flusser. It’s an eighties drape suit, which is an updated version of the 30s style. The favored version has extended natural shoulders, a full chest and a bladed back. The soft-rolled lapels should be about four inches wide with the peak finishing three-quarters of the way across the shoulders. Properly used on double-breasted suits, peaked lapels are considered more elegant than notched ones. Low-slung pockets have a flapped double-besom design- above the flap there’s a slit trimmed on either side with a flat narrow strip of cloth. Four buttons form a low-slung square; above it,about where the lapels cross, there are two more buttons. The trousers are deeply pleated and cut full in order to continue the flow of the wide jacket. An extended waist is cut slightly higher in the front. Tabs make the suspenders fit well at the center back.

GoodWill is kind of hit and miss for me.As others have said,the more robust sizes (48R or 50R here) are not common and they fly of the racks.

Here`s my score from Friday evening: One(1) sports jacket by Jos.A.Bank in 100% camel hair,(MY size even,48R) single breasted,2-button,3-pocket,natural shoulderd(soft?),single vent. Condition is used/excellent. Price was $6.00

The coat seems cut somewhat different from what I am used to.It fits great across the shoulders and back but looks (to me)a tad too big running across the chest and perhaps the midriff. Sleeves too long(of course). Will know more when I have my seamstress examine it on me.

My daughter has made an art of thrift store shopping. One year, back when she was in high school, she picked up a black and white gown for under $10, added some elbow length black gloves and voila - a blonde Audrey Hepburn. Her (then) boyfriend wore a dark suite, white Fedora and black and white shoes - they looked very vintage-classy.

Yesterday, at a Salvation Army store, $11.29 plus sales tax.

Excellent condition (seriously, little if any sign of wear). Always gotta wonder how a garment lasts all those years (more than 50 of 'em, in this case) in such a condition. The stories they could tell, eh?

I have had a few beauties like these over the years. I miss being able to fit into them now, sigh.
I always assumed they were for warmer climates, yes?
