Many people don't seem to understand just how bloody and turbulent history really is. Peace truly was the lull between wars, invasions, plagues, pestilence. It is the best of times and the worst of times. Could you imagine tending your fields in Europe somewhere only to have

The Romans
The Goths
The Visogoths
The Huns
The Mongols

Or any number of lesser tribes or conquering states just show up on your doorstep? Pheh... I'll take today thanks.

You had me at 'imagine tending your fields'. No thanks, sounds bloody awful.

Although (and if anyone knows any better, please chip in) NATO secured the longest period of peace in Europe in history, ever, to date.

Hi Big J,

this of course depends on the definition of Europe - if the geographical definition is used there were quite a lot of miltary conflicts since WW2 (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pax_Europaea for example)

I had been rather optimistic after the disintegration of the Warshaw pact (this was something I had not hoped to see to occur so fast at the time I was in (compulsary) active service in the mid-eighties) but during the past months I get flashbacks from the cold war much more often than I like to ...

After so many years of reading it, I believe the only folks who would want to live in an earlier time are those without enough imagination or information. And yet, see the website I post on....

I think, each one of us on this sight is caught in that oxymoron!
