I think shes well capable of using that switchblade herself . Teddygirls are very independent and strong.

Lots of interesting convo about this topic, which is very close to my heart.

Theres couple of groups on Facebook, which connect either modern/revivalt-style teds or those into orginlan style, in talk we call these original-style followers as Edwardians although all teds are Edwardians. Theres on group called Manchester Peacocks who are specialized in this as original as possible style. Anyway most of the English teds are into Edwardian style, even those who started in the revival times.

And as Jim mentioned before, theres active forum for teds too - for those who LIVE it and for example the founder was an original ted in th 50s.

Yes.... she does indeed. I think that's a distinct part of the attraction. Never had much time for the "I can't do anything, I'm a girl, I need a man to be complete!" types, to be honest.

For some reason I can't directly 'reply with quotes', but in response to H. Johnson's point: "The dress code was adopted by young men who frequented the 'male scene' in and around Chelsea - some of them possibly guards officers (ahem!)."

The Guards were traditionally associated with what you refer to as "the male scene" in London. During the late 1930s police investigations discovered that young guardsmen were very 'active' in central London's parks. Indeed, there is a document in the National Archives at Kew showing that the police even uncovered the existence of 'price lists' for favours administered within the Guards barracks in London. If I remember rightly, the price rates depended on the age of those giving the favours (i.e. how young and 'fresh faced' they were).

I was a Ted in the 1970s, cant see anything wrong with keeping it up really, except when angry young men get to 50years plus and try to re live their lost youth by becoming angry old men. look at our(1970s) arch foes, the punks! Could you really take a 50 year old man seriously dressed in bondage jeans and a DESTROY T shirt. John Lydon looks a joke now, still spitting and snarling at the media.

I think the joke is usually on the media, especially when they think the Rotten persona is Lydon. He's a funny fish. Always looked great when he chose to dress like a Ted though - which he did frequently, partly because he resented the tribalism of claiming ownership of clothes, and partly for the laugh of winding up the punk purists. Lydon's personal preference back in the day was for high waisted trousers, and often original demob suits (not all of which were razored and pinned, away from the cameras). These days, he's big on tweed.

Definitely true, though, that some looks age better than others. Mod (which, granted, I never much cared for) seems to age especially badly. Skinhead works quite well, though: the older you get, the less you have to shave....

These days he's just big, not that I'm criticising, I saw a video of him, dressed in tweed, and he was singing, of all things, the Dean Martin classic: Sway.
But for the life of me I cannot find it now. It's possible that it's been lifted, but it's more likely my ineptness at searching.

That would be fun! Yeah, John's gained a fair bit of weight over the years - though fair play to him, haven't we all since our teens? IT's easy to forget how young he was: barely twenty-one when the PIstols exploded in SF...
